probably alive today because of it.
Speaking of mentors, I have had
the good fortune of meeting some
very accomplished and talented
people during my years as an AEA
member.
There are too many to mention, but I received some excellent
advice many years ago at an AEA
Convention from Don Castleberry
that I would like to share.
He had just retired after selling his company, Castleberry
Instruments and Avionics, to BF
Goodrich Aerospace. We were
visiting at the Pacific Southwest
Instruments booth on the trade show

floor, and I asked him if he had any
advice for someone just starting in
the instrument business?
Castleberry got a big grin on his
face and said, "Well, Jim, it's like
this. Building a successful company
is a lot like climbing a tree. You
gotta be careful and take it slow.
Reach for one branch at a time, and
be sure not to skip any branches.
And while you're climbing, always
keep in mind it can get pretty darn
windy at the top of that tree."
When I founded PSI back in
1982, we started as a one-man
shop with a secretary to answer the
phone. I remember putting a sign in
the window that read "UPS YES"
on one side and "UPS NO" on the
other so the UPS driver would know

if I had anything to ship that day.
Now, 32 years later, PSI has been
blessed with some significant and
healthy growth. I know my investment in time and resources to attend
the AEA conventions through the
years has paid huge dividends in
the development of a solid and firm
foundation to grow our company.
Now that's what I call a great
return on investment.
I hope to see y'all in Dallas for
the AEA Convention in 2015!
