Aircell
"In-flight connectivity continues to be a red-hot
segment" of the avionics industry, David Salvador,
Aircell's director of aftermarket sales, told attendees.
To help meet market demands, Aircell announced its
brand-new ST 4300 in-flight communications solution
for business aircraft at the AEA Convention. Salvador
also announced Aircell
is launching the Gogo
Biz in-flight Internet
and voice service in
Canada as of April 1,
2014. The coverage
expansion means Gogo
Biz customers can use
the service anywhere
it's available over the
Aircell's ST 4300
continental U.S., in
in-flight communications
Alaska and for flights

in Canada. No additional
roaming or registration
fees are required. Coverage will be available in Canada's
most populous regions and flight routes, with seamless
service on cross-border flights.
Meanwhile, the company is billing its Iridium-based
ST 4300 as a "single-box solution for global Iridium
voice, narrowband data and cockpit datalink services."
Available with up to three voice/data channels, plus one
dedicated Iridium data channel, the new ST
4300 is designed to give aircraft operators
flexibility in configuring their cabin and
flight-deck communications system, with
an emphasis on specific capabilities and
budgets. The company said the ST 4300
provides global service coverage - on the
ground and in the air, at all altitudes and
latitudes - including the polar regions.
The ST 4300 will be available
beginning June 1. In the future, it's
expected to be eligible for FANS (future
air navigation system) certification, with its
satellite-based digital datalink allowing a simplified

solution for ATC communication. Additional ST 4300
features include an integrated 802.11 b/g/n wireless
access point and compatibility with the Gogo OnePhone,
Aircell's newest cabin handset. By combining different
functions into a single unit, Aircell said the ST 4300
helps reduce installation weight and box count, while the
system's flexibility allows it to stand alone or be paired
with other services offering in-flight Internet access,
such as Gogo Biz and SwiftBroadband.
Earlier, Aircell announced its Gogo Vision service,
providing an onboard in-flight entertainment and
information server, featuring a library of the latest
movies and TV episodes, plus news, flight progress
information and destination weather.

Alto Aviation
Another competitor in the market for in-flight
entertainment is Alto Aviation, which is seeking to
capitalize with its new Acapella audio system series.
Kevin Hayes, Alto's vice president of sales and
marketing, introduced the new product line. Hayes
told convention attendees the company chose the name
Acapella to highlight the product's ability to serve as a
stand-alone, miniature in-flight entertainment solution
without the need for third-party components.
The Acapella mini-IFE series is a complete, simple
solution for new installations, or as a replacement option
for legacy or inoperative systems, and offers in-flight
entertainment and cabin management. In addition to
featuring quick, simple installation, it routes cabin audio
through mounted speakers or to headphone connections,
and includes source switching and controls.
Several variants within the Acapella product line
are available, allowing the system to be
configured for and accommodate 4or 8-channel cabin audio outputs,
multiple headphone locations, up to
three source inputs and independent
control of each output. Passenger
keypads provide cabin audio and
headphone selection, while
new surface-mounted
speakers allow for
easy, non-evasive
installations. The
