ANOTHER THING THAT'S GETTING A LOT
Enterprises and chairman of the Aircraft Electronics
Association's subcommittee on rotorcraft and government
and industry affairs, the list of new-generation avionics
available for helicopters has made a major shift in his
business. "There are so many different things - XM
weather, ADS-B weather, traffic - things we didn't used
to have available for helicopters," he said. "The main
thing they want to avoid is IFR conditions in a VFR
helicopter. Knowing where the weather is, is critical.
"Traffic systems are also very popular as are H-TAWS
for terrain and obstacles. New databases even show the
locations of power lines. That's really big - low flying
helicopters and high-tension power lines don't mix."
Must play well with others
While the combination of a sluggish economy
and introduction of some new avionics systems and
capabilities have created a topsy-turvy business for
avionics upgraders, one thing has remained consistent
across the board - the challenge of making legacy and
new-generation equipment work together.

"Since most of our work centers on glass panels, I
spend a lot more time consulting with customers to
make sure I understand exactly what they want and that
everyone understands exactly what they are going to get,"
DenDekker said. "And, more importantly, what some
potential 'gotchas' may be that I cannot predict ahead of
time."
By gotchas, DenDekker meant all those little issues
that crop up when you attempt to integrate today's digital
boxes with yesterday's analog units and sometimes the
interfaces between multiple digital boxes.
