"Now with all the variations of
nav/comm, GPS, autopilot, glass
displays, traffic, weather, analog,
digital, AHARS, air-data computers
- all this new digital equipment,
you really have to pay attention to
the interface," he said. "You can
follow the drawings and tie it all
together, and it may still not work
right. Dealing with multiple digital
interfaces, particularly from different
manufacturers, can be tricky. Today,
you spend a lot more time planning
for and working out these issues."
Aside from making sure the right
thing lights up when you press
the right button, DenDekker said
he works hard to help protect his
customers from having unknown
expenses with their installations.
So establishing realistic customer
expectations has become a larger
part of his daily job.
"We can't catch all the unknowns,
but I spend a lot of my time
questioning the customer about what
he has and what he wants," he said.
"If we don't have direct access to the
aircraft, I ask for a lot of pictures of
the current panel. These can tell me
a lot about what's going on in that
aircraft, and we can start to account
for those instances."
Of course, it's not only the
aircraft's owner you worry about
making happy today - often times,
your friends at the Federal Aviation
Administration want to have their
say.
"There are so many things
they (owners) want to put in their
helicopters, and now and then
we have to determine what is
compatible with what and if we
actually have room to put it all in
there," Wysong said. "And we're

battling right now with the FAA
wanting to see everything right in
front of the pilot. There just isn't
that much available panel space in
the typical helicopter. So a large part
of our role is trying to put all these
items in a panel in a way that works
for the customer and the FAA. What
has to be done with an STC and what
can we do with a field approval?
It's becoming quite a balancing act
now."
Obviously, the original equipment
manufacturers' installation manuals
and diagrams can only go so far
when it comes to what it will
actually take to put all the pieces
together - and make them work.

"Detailed engineering is becoming
a much greater requirement today in
every size project," DenDekker said.
"It used to be when the 430 and 530
first came out, you could access their
interfaces pretty easily. You had a
good idea what did and didn't work
with them. It's not that easy today."

Everyone I talked to for this story
said that in today's market, they
consider their roles much more as
consultants than "box movers."
As a result, DenDekker said his
proposals are a lot more detailed
