Bad Apples

How to deal with workplace abuse

T

he account manager would
storm into status meetings
and demand to know why
her clients' work wasn't done. She
would attack right through the
department manager, incensed that
no one else seemed to care about
her critical projects, and she'd rage
at the ineffectiveness of each staff
member. Used to this, a few "safe"
employees would roll their eyes,
while the rest fidgeted restlessly.
This, apparently, was how
business got done. Within weeks,
even new hires knew to gauge her
urgency by the level of vitriol;
the volume was a given, and only
the personal nature of the jabs
relayed the importance of each
assignment. Fed up, a colleague
finally mentioned that this behavior
accomplished nothing. Not much
later, that person was gone, and the
tyrant got a promotion.
It was out of control. Toxic. A
waste of time, talent and energy.

And a waste of every one of their
customers' money, as productivity
sputtered to a halt.
Unfortunately, though, it's not
uncommon. According to a study
by staffing firm Accountemps,

At face value, some conflict isn't
a bad thing. It's the heart of creative
problem solving. When strategies,
goals and ideas are debated and
vetted, teams make better decisions.
But "some" is not "all," particularly
when the conflict becomes abusive.
That's why you need to understand
how bad conflict works, the warning
signs to watch for, and what it can do
to your company.
