The need to transit oceans beyond sight of land elevated to
a fundamental the ability to calculate north and south position
changes. The drive to solve the problem sparked as wide a range
of failed inventions as mankind's failed attempts at flight.
The holy grail of navigation science inspired royal prizes and
even a government prize in the 17th and 18th centuries.
In 1714, the British government offered the Longitude Prize
through an act of Parliament. The prize would go to John Harrison some 41 years later in recognition of his chronometer,
which provided a simple, practical method for precisely determining longitude.
The chronograph provided an accurate reference for the final
variable factor in calculating longitude and gave navigators the
full set of analog tools: sextant, celestial tables and chronograph.
With a clear sky, the best navigators can chart fixes to within a
few thousand feet.
Those tools guided aviators globally, day, night, anytime -
and anywhere - with a clear sky. This clarity was the rub for
aviation, in particular.

As a pilot seeking better ways to navigate, Hubert L. Naimer founded
Universal Avionics in 1981.

Joachim L. "Ted" Naimer, also a pilot, presently serves as president and
chairman of Universal's board of directors.

Through the clouds and back again
Aviation's speed almost instantly challenged celestial navigation's limitations.
The first aircraft flew far faster than ships. With increased
range and reliability, their faster speed made faster navigation a
new essential. In time, aircraft needs grew to include guidance
through clouds.
Aviation's pool of diverse talent developed those navigation
alternatives using variations of another technology new at the
end of the 19th century.
Wireless opened the way for multiple formats and technologies independent of a view of the sky: arrows pointing toward
AM radio stations, the ADF, the four-segment radio range, the
360-segment VOR, and area navigation using Loran and, eventually, satellite-based navigation systems such as our Global
Positioning System.
Still, aviation needed accurate positioning data, instantly,
without the delay or mistakes of misinterpreting all the common
cockpit navigation sources. Swiss inventor Hubert L. Naimer
recognized that need, and in 1976, began developing his vision
of a master navigation system capable of computing position
data using inputs from an aircraft's diverse sensors - and then
converting that data into accurate, easy to use navigational guidance.
From the roots of that work, Naimer founded Universal Avionics in 1981.
