Mike Robinson of

Your title is avionics
manager. What does
that mean?
Normally, the avionics manager is in
the shop most of the time. I'm on the
road more than in the office. I'm only
at the shop two days a week. Most of
the time, I'm troubleshooting AOGs
from Orlando to Miami.

oca Aircraft Maintenance is
a maintenance and repair
facility located in South
Florida. The company is an FAA repair
station with EASA and government
of Bermuda authorizations that
specializes in Dassault Falcon,
Bombardier Challenger and Learjet,
Eclipse and Hawker aircraft. As
company officials like to say, "Plane
broke? BAM ... it's fixed!"
Recently, Patricia Luebke, Avionics
News contributor, spoke with Mike
Robinson to learn more about his work
at BAM and life outside the hangar.

I went to Embry-Riddle
Aeronautical University for
maintenance and avionics training,
and earned a bachelor's degree. I
stayed there for another year and
worked at its repair station. When
I left, I went to work for General
Dynamics, which was becoming
Gulfstream at the time. I was doing
installs on corporate jets - Falcons,
Challengers, and then went to work
for Jet Aviation in West Palm Beach
for 10 years doing troubleshooting.
That facility was closed down, but
I knew it was coming, and I started
doing my own thing with my own
company. I bought all the test
equipment. My boss also started a
company, and he bought me out.

Are you a Florida
native?
No, I'm from Connecticut. My
parents were going to retire in
Florida, and my brother moved here.
I was dating a girl in Florida and then

my sister moved, so basically, the
whole family moved to Florida.

Did your interest in
electronics originate
when you were young?
Yes. I remember my friend
and I used to go to the garage
to wire items and make things
work. We'd take things apart,
do an experiment. One time,
we tried to make an amplifier
and blew up the subwoofer
owned by my friend's father.
When I was 14, my father
bought me flying lessons, and
I eventually got my pilot's
license. When I was 18, I
wanted to be a car mechanic
or a pilot. In my first year at
Embry-Riddle, I did a lot of
thinking. I love fishing, but I
don't want to do it for a living.
That's when I headed toward
aircraft maintenance.

What do you like best
about your job?
Troubleshooting. I like to take
what is broken and make it work. I
like being the guy that when no one
else can figure it out, I can and the
customer relies on me.
