Is troubleshooting a
skill that's learned
or a talent?
If you don't have experience on
an aircraft, it's difficult. It always
comes down to understanding the
systems. If you don't understand
how a system works, don't even
start troubleshooting. You have to sit
down and read about it before you
try to tackle it. Having said that, it is
sometimes an inherent ability.

So what's a typical day?
On any average day, I don't know
what airport I will be working. I always
get asked, "Can you come tomorrow?"
I drive from airport to airport. If I can
stop what I'm doing, I will. I'll tell the
customer that I have an AOG down
the road. If the customer is OK with
that, I'll go. I carry my passport with
me, as I am sometimes called to the
Bahamas or other islands.
BAM is now getting into installs.
Some people like installs; some people
like troubleshooting. If you are going
to do inspections, you must do installs.
We will appoint an install lead, the
lead will run the job, and I'll oversee it.
Sometimes with a new install, I'll have
to debug it.

Do you have a
favorite airplane?
My favorites are Falcons,
Gulfstreams, Challengers and

Hawkers. We do a lot of work on
Hawkers. I'm not a big fan of the
others, because I don't know them.
People like to work on what they
are comfortable and confident with.

What's the corporate
culture at BAM?
It varies. Most of the time, we
have a set schedule. But we can go
from being relaxed to hearing there's
a plane broken on the ramp, so you
drop everything and go. The reason to
work is for money, so we want to keep
things profitable, keep customers
happy, and try to have fun doing it.
By the way, I have a broad view of
avionics. I think anything with a wire is
avionics, so I see the pressurization system, for example, as part of avionics.

daughter named Ali who is big into
animals. She likes the outdoors and
going on the boat.
I also play bass with a friend.
We play in his garage; once a week
we'll get together and play rock
'n' roll and country. We've talked
about performing, but we don't.
Perhaps someday down the road.

What is your favorite
song to play?
That's a tough one. My friend and
I know 150 songs - newer country or
classic rock - so I don't have a favorite.

What do you see
for the future?

Tell me about
your family.

Where I live in Palm Beach
County, tons of people still have
airplanes. During the recession,
work slowed down a bit, but the
local economy was still working. I
would like to think that everything
will remain status quo. Our
company is only 6 years old, and
we've grown to 50 employees.
We're busy and still hiring more
people. Everything is going
great, but my boss sees other
opportunities, and we're getting
bigger. We have a great group of
customers, and we do good work. q

My mother is retired, and my
sister and brother live in Jupiter,
Florida, where I live. My wife is
Joan, and we have an 8-year-old

What do you do when
you're not working?
I like boating. I have a 24-foot
Scout with a cuddy cabin and
outboard. Sometimes, we take the
family to the sandbar and go deepsea fishing for dolphins, tuna or
wahoo. Sometimes, we bottom fish
for grouper or snapper.
