of bleach and it immediately
soaked everything, including all
his uniforms. We watched as the
bag turned from blue to white,
and the clear bleach turned a
rainbow of absorbed colors as
it seeped over the ground. We
didn't know what to do. Were
we allowed to laugh? Apparently
not. Our tactical instructor was
not amused. We were allowed to
listen as the poor uncoordinated
guy was ridiculed into the ground.
This was not the end of his
embarrassment.
I could go on with those
memories but will skip to the
point of the story. We were given
our acceptance physicals one
day. As we proceeded from one
checking station to another, we
were given our individual tests
as opposed to the test where we
all participated. We were told to
take off all our clothes and stand
in a circle facing the center. I
wondered what kind of a game
they were playing. Then, we were
told to grab the cheeks of our
butts and bend over. With my
head facing the floor, I was able
to glance at some guy walking
around bending over and looking
at us. I guess that was some kind
of test to see if we embarrassed
easily. I must have passed, as
we went on to the next station
individually.
Everything was OK until
one of the medics looked up
my nose and told me I had a

deviated septum. This meant the
cartilage separating my nostrils
was almost closed on one side.
He told me I couldn't be a pilot
with that problem. My heart
started racing, as my dreams
were shattered in that couple of
seconds.
At the next station, they
checked my blood pressure.
It must have been through the
roof, as the medic said it was too
high to be a pilot. Of all the times
to check my blood pressure!
With all those things smashing
my dreams, I had to regroup
my thinking. During the rest
of basic training, we were all
treated without respect and were
belittled at every opportunity.
I was stopped and asked if I
shaved one morning. I replied,
"Yes sir!" to another tactical
instructor, who immediately told
me to put a blade in the razor
next time.
