and supervision, and they follow only
because they must, according to John
S. McCallum, professor of finance at the
University of Manitoba.
This is not such a problem with conformists. They will
perform their task, work hard and they are motivated,
but they don't take the extra step of thinking critically
about what they're doing. They allow leaders to make
decisions for them without considering options, outcomes
or alternatives on their own. They simply go with the flow,
wherever that might take them.
Alienated followers do think for themselves, but that's
not necessarily a good thing. At some point, something
stuck in their craw, and they disengaged. Yet they probably
do care; otherwise, they wouldn't bother getting upset.
Still, they're skeptical of any ideas other than their own,
and in their sour moods, they respond to the leader's edicts
with a litany of reasons for why they're bad ideas.
The exemplary followers are the shining stars. They're
engaged and motivated, present and prepared, enthusiastic
and self-reliant, and they work with the group and leader
for everyone's success. Or at least they don't push against
it. If they agree with a course of action, they'll back it
completely; if they don't, they'll offer a tactful challenge
while proposing reasonable alternatives. At the same

time, they're willing to change
their mind because they're
capable of trust.
In real life, we're mostly pragmatic
followers; we move between the various styles
depending on tasks and how things go personally - with
the leader and within the group. Therein rests the problem:
Employees with any of the nonexemplary styles foster
bad group dynamics. Passive people don't contribute,
conformists don't think and, together, they can contribute
to groupthink - or the trait of a group to concur too easily
and overlook smarter ideas. Both styles follow blindly, and
that works for a do-as-I-say leader until it doesn't.
Alienated followers aren't much more useful, even when
they present a legitimately valuable contrary opinion.
By the time they raise a worthwhile concern, they have
already annoyed the team so much that no one listens.
A leader's best friend, then, is the exemplary follower.
Sure, it might get annoying answering questions about
why you want to do certain things, listening to her evaluate
facts, and waiting for her to come on board, but she's taking
responsibility for her decisions. Her courage to express
concerns might save you some headaches, and her buy-in
builds your credibility.
