ecently, there has been a fair amount of discussion
on the upcoming 2020 ADS-B Out mandate in the
press. More and more, ADS-B Out installations
are being requested by avionics repair shop customers. As we
approach the Federal Aviation Administration's Jan. 1, 2020,
deadline in the U.S., it will become a larger portion of the
industry's installation business. Aircraft owners are looking to
their local avionics repair shops for guidance on what solutions to install, and how to do it in a rule-compliant fashion.
Unfortunately, not all shops are up to speed on the technology
and the real choices. This article will focus on the low end of
the market, primarily the piston crowd where there are more
choices available.
FIRST, SOME BASICS
There are two technology choices for aircraft that fly
below 18,000 feet mean sea level; one is based on the Mode
S transponder with extended squitter (1090 ES using 1090
MHz), and the other is based on the MITRE-developed
technology called the universal access transceiver (UAT using 978 MHz). Aircraft flying at or above 18,000 feet MSL
require the use of a 1090 ES transponder.
The FAA's basic mandate (see 91.225 for the specific
details) is for use of the following airspace: inside Class A,
B and C airspace; above the lateral boundaries of a Class
C or B airspace; inside the 30 nautical mile Mode C veil;
and Class E airspace above 10,000 feet MSL excluding the
airspace below 2,500 AGL.
