Experts blame a small population, distance to large
markets, low taxes and high local currency, among other
issues. Despite years of disappointing results from economic
reforms, manufacturers such as Aerovalley Technologies hope
something can be done.
"We would like to see the federal government put more
focus and direction into the manufacturing sector of the
aviation industry, particularly in the general aviation sector, and
support the development of manufacturing in Australia," said
Loretta Wheatland. "It requires a highly skilled workforce and
the continuous development of knowledge."
Adding maintenance capabilities
At Adelaide Airport and Alice Springs Airport, Aerovalley
Technologies' team of highly skilled and experienced licensed
aircraft maintenance engineers install and service avionics and
cabin electronics in-house and on-site at a customer's location.

"If a customer cannot come to us, we have flyaway teams
available for remote services," said Loretta Wheatland.
The company is an authorized service center for Garmin and
a distributor for most major avionics manufacturers, including
Avidyne, FreeFlight Systems, Mid-Continent Instruments and
Avionics, SkyTrac, Gogo Business Aviation and more.
"We work with both rotary and fixed-wing aircraft and can
custom design your avionics suite, fully refurbish interiors
and support airframe and engine maintenance," said Loretta
Wheatland. "We are also able to design and manufacture
aeronautical products to suit your needs."
As for its next evolution, Aerovalley Technologies is
focused on the near future. The CASA's ADS-B deadlines are
looming. IFR aircraft must be equipped with GNSS navigation
by February 2016. Every IFR aircraft flying in Australian
airspace at all levels is required to have ADS-B by February
2017. Aerovalley Technologies is gearing up by increasing its
manufacturing capabilities and Part 145 maintenance scope.
"The deadlines are coming fast," said Brett Wheatland.
"We've been ramping up our capabilities so we're ready with
certified products and trained engineers. It's going to take a
huge effort on the industry's part to ensure every aircraft is in
