t's a safe bet that everyone reading Avionics News is familiar with ADS-B. If you
aren't, you've probably picked up the wrong magazine. While we all should know
what ADS-B is, there are still plenty of aircraft owners who have a lot of questions
about why they need it and how they'll meet the Federal Aviation Administration's
2020 implementation deadline.
For most aircraft owners, and many
avionics shops for that matter, answering
the "how" question is the challenge. Think

of private and business airplanes and
helicopters in the U.S., and few of them
have the same avionics mounted in their
respective panels.
This can make knowing what equipage
solution is best (and most affordable) for a

particular aircraft difficult. But thankfully,
there is help for aircraft owners and shop managers.
The Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association recently created an online ADS-B
Selector Tool, which is located at www.aopa.org/Pilot-Resources/Aircraft-Ownership/
Technology/ADS-B. After answering a few simple questions about your type of flying
- what kind of airspace you frequent, what avionics are in your airplane currently - it
will show you a list, complete with pricing, of which universal access transceiver and
Mode S products will best fit your needs and budget.
