WHY I FLY WITH ADS-B
Continued from page 27

Conroy said the traffic end of ADS-B is impressive.
"On our EFIS screens, you get a square with two rings
- there's a 2-mile ring and a 5-mile ring," he said. "You
see the traffic as a yellow diamond and then it tells you
his location above or below by X number of feet. It will
say plus 03, which means the target is 300 feet above you.
Then on the EFIS screens, the moving map, you get vector
lines. So you can see your position and the traffic with lines
that extend outward from that traffic symbol telling you
which direction he's going. You can look at him and see if
and where you are going to intersect. So you can plan well
ahead. You can see when the traffic turns and when you
turn. It's pretty darn good."
Like many pilots, Conroy had his doubts about the value
of ADS-B. Not any more.
"I was a skeptic at first," he said. "Now I'm no longer
skeptical. It really does a nice job."
 TOM HAINES
* Bonanza A36
* ADS-B equipment:
- Garmin GDL 88 Datalink transceiver
- Garmin 330/ES extended
squitter transponder
"I have a belt and suspenders approach," Haines said.
"I have a GDL 88, which can be ADS-B In and Out. I also
have a GTN 750 and a G500. When I did the panel upgrade,
I also needed a transponder. So I installed the Garmin 330/
ES with extended squitter. I can fly anywhere on the planet
and be covered.
"The ES is my primary Out, and then the GDL 88
handles the In portion and displays the traffic and weather
on the GTN 750 and 530W, which is my No. 2 radio. As
soon as I get the latest software upgrade from Garmin, I
will also be able to display the traffic and weather on the
G500, which will be great."
Haines explained that his duties with the AOPA keep
most of his flying on the East Coast and the Northeast, with
infrequent trips as far west as Wichita, Kansas.
While Haines said it didn't take any convincing for him
to appreciate the value of ADS-B as a safety system, it was
brought home during one particular flight.
"Not long after I did the ADS-B install and avionics
upgrade, I was doing an instrument proficiency flight with
an instructor just to get myself comfortable with all the new
gear," he said. "We were shooting an approach into Frederick,
Maryland, and we were on the transition just coming up on
the Westminster VOR. I was under the hood and the CFI was
acting as safety pilot. All of a sudden, we got a traffic alert

- traffic 12 o'clock, less than a mile - and it came up on the
screen and got the audio alert and voice warning.
"The CFI said climb, and just as I did, right there in front
of us was a 172 heading south. He was crossing in front of
us, right at the same altitude. It was hard to gauge, but it
sure looked like we would have hit had we not gotten the
warning and taken evasive action. It was close.
"Most of the reason I wanted ADS-B Out was traffic. I
already have XM weather, and it's good. But I wanted the
traffic. When I did the panel upgrade, I looked at the cost
of ADS-B and an active traffic system. It's an easy call.
Back then, an ADS-B system was about $5,000. Today, it's
probably $3,000. The active traffic was about $10,000.
"To me it's an easy call if traffic matters to you. Here in
the Northeast, it's important."

"I have a full IHAS system in my airplane," Bannen
said. "I have a moving map and a transponder with TIS-B.
I can also do XM weather, and it has a moving map. When
I installed it 10 years ago, it was leading-edge stuff. I have
what I need in my airplane already, so when I installed
ADS-B Out, I knew what I was getting. It was more a
benefit to the FAA than to me. They want to replace radar
coverage, and this will help them do that. But it's mandated,
so I added it. It's good because airplanes will be able to
see each other where we could not before, and that's great.
So I understand ADS-B Out. But with ADS-B In, I didn't
understand the benefits then; I do now."
Bannen said that while he likes the graphical quality of
his paid-for XM weather subscription, the free ADS-B In
provided images are good enough to provide him the go/
no-go decision information he wants.
"It (ADS-B Out) shows me what I need to see and it's
free," he said. "But what I want to see I get with ADS-B
In. I also have the METARs. I was very surprised at how
much I like what it gives me. I can save about $600 a year
on no longer needing my XM weather subscription. That
adds up to about $6,000 over 10 years. And I'm sure the
ADS-B weather will get better. To me, the weather is more
important to my flying than the ADS-B traffic."
As for moving map capabilities, Bannen said that for one
who doesn't have it now and installs ADS-B, the moving
map capabilities are great.
"I can also use a less expensive type of electronic chart
subscription with this system," he said. "I can use WingX
now with my system and it's less expensive than other
