Woodard typically uses the ForeFlight with Stratus1 with
displays on iPad.
"I fly for pleasure and business mostly around Florida,"
he said. "I put the Garmin 33 in the Cessna about three
years ago. I'm happy with the traffic I get with it. I had
some issues with getting the traffic on my ForeFlight for a
while, but that has gone away. I don't have ASD-B In yet.
I've been looking to add the Avidyne MLB100 when that
becomes available.

"From the pilot's seat, you don't see a lot of benefits
from the ADS-B Out. But I think the traffic I get on my
iPad is definitely better. The weather updates are good for
an overall planning perspective. The little indicator on the
display says the weather is "one minute" old, but I can see
out the windshield that it's older - the storms have moved a
lot more than the display shows. So it's more of an overall
planning tool than a tactical avoidance tool for avoidance."
Woodard explained that he basically added ADS-B
capabilities for the flight club aircraft to make sure
everybody would have access to traffic information in the
busy airspace around Palm Beach, Florida.
"We try to do safety education seminars for our club
members," he said. "It's not generally understood that
you're not getting the full traffic picture if you don't have
the ADS-B Out capability."
He said that one question he has about ADS-B is what
impact it will have on his trips to the Bahamas.
"I'm flying to the islands on vacation, and I'm looking
forward to seeing what I will pick up with ADS-B Out
down there," he said. "Will I be able to pick up more
aircraft out there? I hope so." q
