Trig, Peregrine partnership grows ADS-B Approved Model List

supplemental type certificate is the Federal Aviation Administration's approval to modify an original aircraft
design. It itemizes the approved changes to an aircraft's type certificate and embodies test data on how those
changes affect the original design. Earning one is not a quick or uncomplicated process, but this shared goal has
forged a close partnership between Trig Avionics, based in the United Kingdom, and Peregrine, a 6-year-old Colorado
company that provides advanced systems engineering services and integrated electronic solutions for Part 23 and Part
25 aircraft seeking STCs or type certification.
For some, according to Andy Davis, Trig's chief executive officer, the ADS-B STC requirement "is an interesting
quibble." Posing a rhetorical question, "Is it really necessary or sensible, because the system does not change the airframe, powerplant or aircraft performance?"
Stand-alone systems, such as a transponder, don't require an STC because its
manufacturer has demonstrated and documented its intended use and installation requirements through the unit's certification, he explained. When an
avionics shop follows this guidance, "it will perform as designed because all
the functions and messages are all inside the box."
But ADS-B is not a stand-alone system. "Any system with

continued, and how a shop installs the combination of components can affect its performance. Position accuracy, fault
detection, integrity, error condition, "almost any WAAS GPS
gets this bit right, but it is the additional information that's
important," Davis said.
"Look at the ADS-B performance requirements: latency,
fault protections, relative latency between velocity and position
reports, time to detect a failed satellite, and the integrity report the
system sends. None of these could be solved by the most gifted installer.
You'd never figure it out by looking at the manual. You have to work with the
design data, because you really don't know that the arbitrary combination of a GPS
