"We look for anomalies and, when they
are found, dig into them to explain or
resolve them," Rankin concluded.
Rankin learned the ins and outs of avionics in the U.S. Air Force. Graduating
from its academy with a degree in
electrical engineering, he spent much
of the next six years working on electronic warfare for special operations,
with some time dedicated to the Atlas V
launch vehicle program. Upon his discharge, he stayed in the Denver area and
spent eight years working on airframe
and avionics certification for Adam
Aircraft, which was developing a cleansheet Part 23 airplane, the A500, a composite six-seater centerline twin. "After
Adam, I started my own shop that, initially, focused on electrical engineering
STC activities related to re-engining,
aircraft mods, and new power or mission systems," he said. During the past
six years, the Peregrine team of eight
"talented engineers and experts became
STC experts and developed a strong
partnership with the FAA's Denver aircraft certification office."
Both Rankin and Davis said that
the fruit of their ADS-B STC partnership benefits the owners of amateurbuilt experimental aircraft as much as
it does those who own Part 23 aircraft.
They acknowledge that the FAA doesn't
require homebuilders to employ an
STC'd ADS-B solution, "but they have
to assert that the combination of equipment they install meets all the requirements of the rule," Rankin said. And the
easiest way to accomplish this, Davis
said, "is with the STC." By following
its requirements for equipment, software
versions and wiring diagrams, they will
have a system that has demonstrated its
performance.
"This successful Anglo-U.S. partnership between Trig and Peregrine delivered the first 1090 ES ADS-B STC,"
Davis said. "By pioneering further STC
expansion, Trig continues to grow the
pool of aircraft owners who can directly
employ their ADS-B solution ahead of
the 2020 mandate." q
