equipment already in the aircraft (with
particular attention to antennas and
the existing transponder, if it's being
retained) is critical to a successful
installation - as is following vendor
installation instructions and STC
requirements to the letter.
The FAA recently reported the
following common problems had turned
up in a voluntary program to check
ADS-B systems for proper operation:
* Improper setting of surveillance
integrity level.
* Improper setting of system
design assurance.
* Transmit of Mode 3/A code not
enabled (UAT devices).
* Improper setting of ICAO 24-bit

address (Mode S code).
Improper configuration of airground determination.
* Improper interface with
barometric altitude source.
* Improper setting of emitter
category.
* Incorrect configuration of Flight
ID (aircraft call sign).
All of these (except possibly the
last) should have been caught during
ground or flight tests before the aircraft
was turned over to the operator -
as discussed in Chapter 4 (Test &
Evaluation) of AC 20-165. As for the
last, it points up one final issue that
avionics shops should be aware of:
ADS-B is a complex technology, and
it's new. Don't assume the operator
understands how the system works until
you've shown them. q
