regularly to check progress on
projects, holding one-on-one and
team meetings to share information
and 360-degree concerns, and
welcoming feedback, according to
Bishop. As he grows more confident
in his team, he'll know when to get
out of their way so they can do their
work.
In the meantime, he should
remember he's a role model for
his people, so he should be on the
top of his game by sticking to his
word, censoring his personal gripes,
and otherwise representing the
department professionally. He'll also
do well to get a few early wins -
even if it's simply bringing donuts
on his first day, setting up regular
after-hours team get-togethers, or

solving a long-standing problem
that's never been addressed or
demonstrating that he has his team
members' backs.
With all due respect, he should
also learn to "manage up" to meet
your expectations, too - that is,
work closely with his supervisor to
discuss team goals, progress and
issues so that his team performance
is tied to your shop's priorities. In
fact, these objectives can be his best
friend - they give him a common
language between what you want
and what he needs to communicate
with and persuade his people.
However, none of this occurs if he's
unable to focus on his work. A key is
ensuring that he manages the stress
of his new role; this transition will

take a toll on the wellbeing of most
any employee, and doing otherwise
inevitably leads to unraveling - either
emotionally or physically. At least one
day each weekend, he should unplug
from the office and do something
relaxing. He's on a steep learning
curve; he should take time to rest
during the climb.
Growing a new leader is an
investment in time, effort and
intention, and given the role he or
she will play in your shop's success,
it's an investment worth making. By
helping him smooth the transition,
you're allowing him to learn that job
most effectively. In the end, you're
making your work in progress a
progressive leader for the future of
your shop. q
