craft along with the corporate fleet,
and it went rather well. One of my
customers who came in with his
Cessna 310 was Connie Kalitta of
drag racing fame. At that time, the
310 was his only plane.
Eventually, I decided to branch
off to own my own shop. I arranged
with the owners of Mettetal Airport
in Plymouth, Michigan, to lease
space in the maintenance hangar.
I kept it a secret while constructing
the shop but was discovered within
a few days of completion. When
that happened, I was given a cardboard box with instructions to insert all my belongings in said box
and depart the premises. My boss
came to the shop to view my compliance with his instructions. It was
lunch time so I offered to buy his
lunch. He was completely beside
himself, as he couldn't understand
why I would buy his lunch after he
just fired me. I had no hard feelings
toward the man, as he was just following instructions from the corporate office in New York. We had a
good lunch.
I already had my King dealership in the bag along with a few
other manufacturers, including
Genave. I sat my cardboard box in
my car and proceeded to go to my
almost finished shop. I received
two Genave Alpha 200 nav/comms
that day, so I just loaded them in
the car and drove to a couple of
nearby avionics shops. I sold both
of them on my first day of being a
Genave distributor - not a totally
wasted day.
I designed my workbench area
to a standard I had adopted, which
remained my standard throughout
my career. Until then, all shops just
had shelves with the test equipment sitting on them. This was
quite unattractive to the eye, so my
method was to surround the test

equipment with paneling or any
attractive material that would hide
the empty spaces. This gave the
appearance of a custom installation and was pleasing to the eyes
of customers.
My first personally owned shop

had a large learning curve, and I
missed the curve, heading toward
a cash flow deficit. I panicked and
accepted an offer to sell to a Cincinnati firm while remaining as
