AEA Regional Meetings
continue in Canada,
South Pacific and U.S.
The 2015 AEA Regional Meetings will conclude in the
next few weeks with stops in Toronto, Ontario; Tampa,
Florida; and Queenstown, New Zealand.
The Toronto Airport Hilton will be the site for the AEA
Canada Regional Meeting, Oct. 1-2.
The third and final regional meeting of the year in the
U.S. is slated for Oct. 12-13 at the DoubleTree Tampa
Airport hotel. Advance registrations may be made online
until Oct. 7. A special regulatory training course will be
offered in Tampa with a review for the evaluation of alterations in making a determination of major or minor.
The seventh and final event of 2015 takes place Nov. 2-3
at the Millennium Hotel in Queenstown, New Zealand, and
the AEA South Pacific Regional Meeting. Advance registrations may be made online until Oct. 27.
The Aircraft Electronics Association annually hosts
regional meetings in the U.S., Canada, Europe, Latin
America and the South Pacific. The AEA Regional Meetings
offer a forum to see, hear and learn about all the new technology on the market, network with industry peers and discover best practices for the aviation repair station industry.
Attendees and exhibitors gather for two to three days of
regulatory and technical seminars, business management
sessions and exhibits.

Industry white
paper outlines
strategy to reduce
fatal helicopter
accidents

An association and industry white paper
was recently published that outlines a strategy to reduce fatal helicopter accidents by
facilitating instrument flight rule operations
in lieu of visual flight rules when conditions
do not support safe flight under VFR. It also
details a proposal to facilitate an economically viable IFR certification plan for singleengine helicopters.
The white paper was prepared by the
Aircraft Electronics Association; Helicopter
Association International; American
Helicopter Society International; and the
General Aviation Manufacturers Association.
According to the report, "It is generally
accepted that an increase in rotorcraft IFR
operations would provide a significant safety
improvement ... Currently, inadvertent
flight into instrument meteorological conditions or controlled flight into terrain while
attempting to fly under weather conditions
continues to be a major contributor to the
accident statistics for rotorcraft - especially
single-engine rotorcraft. Certifying singleengine helicopters for IFR with systems that
are ergonomic and confidence inspiring will
lead to increased use of the IFR system and
improved situational awareness during VFR
operations. It is reasonable to speculate that
as pilots choose to conduct operations IFR
instead VFR, fatal IIMC, CFIT and certain
accidents attributable to loss of control will
be eliminated. Successful and safe completion of missions under IFR will have a
snowball effect throughout the industry. It is
likely that single-engine operators will begin
to mandate operations under IFR when conditions do not support safe VFR operations
once a practical means-of-compliance for
IFR certification is established."
