DO-160 testing begins with
the design process, he said, and
marketing personnel play an important part in it because they must
understand the environment represented by the new unit's intended
customers. Some aspects, such as
aircraft power supplies, 14 or 28
volt, and vibration - helicopter
or fixed-wing - are obvious. But
others are more subtle. Where will
the equipment operate, the Arctic
of the tropics? And where will the
equipment be mounted? When it
comes to vibration, designers often
have to know the make and model
of helicopter because they have
their own vibration signatures.
And that signature is different for
equipment mounted in the cockpit
compared to a component mounted
in an engine nacelle.
With all of the environmental
targets established, the designers
also must know the appropriate
safety consequences of the unit's
failure, Moore said. It's a fivelevel scale that ranges from no
effect, as might be the case for a
passenger entertainment unit, to
catastrophic, which would result
from the failure of a flight or
engine control. This assessment
determines, in part, to what degree
the unit surpasses the minimum
performance standards set by the
applicable TSO and certification
requirements. This includes a
thorough review of the applicable
aviation regulations and advisory
circulars that address the electromagnetic environment.
The DO-160 tests are, in themselves, straightforward, and many
of them can be completed in a day
or so, Moore said. The accompanying paperwork is another story.

Testing is but one aspect of the total certification effort. Manufacturers not only must document every
step of each test, they must also
explain why they tested to a specified level, or why they did not test
to another level. And they have to
trace each test back to the requirement that called for it. "There has
to be a reason for every step of the
process," Moore explained, and
then the entire document package
is submitted to the certification
agency that will be involved in the
testing.
Transport Canada, the FAA and
the EASA are the certification
agencies Jupiter Avionics deals
with most frequently. For a time,
the EASA's testing format was different from the TCCA and the FAA,
but those differences have reduced
or eliminated through the harmonization of the requirements. "When
testing is complete, we submit two
certification packages to Transport
Canada," Moore said. "When they
are happy with it, TC sends the
second package to the FAA, which
does its own evaluation of the
document before issuing its TSO
approval. The EASA issues its approval when Transport Canada issues its TSO approval of the unit."
The documentation that accompanies TSO avionics includes the
environmental ranges in which the
equipment has proven its reliable
operations. This information is
important to avionics shops that
sell and install the equipment.
The TSO specifies the minimum
requirements, Moore said, and depending on the intended customer
environment, "the manufacturer
can choose the lightest level test."
It is up to the shops to compare
this environmental data to the environment in which their customers operate. q
