with multiple batteries. One 12volt battery is for the utility terrain
vehicle, and two in series provide
power for the avionics. Solar
panels keep the extra batteries
charged enough for a 90-minute
demonstration, which according
to Mike Keith in the engineering,
research and development
department, "is usually more than
enough to show them everything."
In front of the steering wheel
sits a King Air instrument panel
equipped with a fully operational
avionics suite, complete with
backup instruments. The weather

radar sensor is mounted high, ahead
of the front bumper. GPS, VOR and
comm antennas protrude from an
extended roof. Remotely mounted
units sit ahead of solar panels in
the Gator's bed. Magnetometers
and AHRS remotes are on a special
plate mounted to a rack that soars
above the tailgate.
Specifically, the Gator is equipped
with dual Garmin G600 displays,
a GTN 750/TAWS touchscreen
multifunction display, a King
KSN 770 multifunction display, a
Garmin GMA 35 audio system, a
Garmin GTX 33ES transponder, an
L-3 Avionics Systems SkyWatch
collision avoidance system, a
Garmin GWX 68 radar, and a

The whole suite is functional.
Potential customers can ride
around the airport while watching
the instruments show their pitch
attitude. There is plenty of traffic
around Meacham International
Airport, so customers can watch
the traffic on the SkyWatch system.
Because landing gear condition
changes TCAS sensitivity, the Gator
is equipped with a gear up switch
to simulate flight. The customer
has the ability to tune into local
navigation stations, or if necessary,
tune into signals generated by
Fieldtech's test equipment.
The company built the King Air
panel for a customer it expected,
but who did not show up. The
demonstrator has turned out to be
an excellent use for this spare panel.
Soon after completion, it used the
demonstrator with four potential
customers. Two of them purchased
packages.
Fieldtech also has been working
with the Maryland Institute of
Technology since 1993 on a hybrid
millimeter radar and infrared
system for heads-up displays.
The system will be designed for
use on large aircraft. To date, on
behalf of the Maryland Institute, it
has installed five systems on two
different aircraft.
Since the mid-1970s, Fieldtech
