more succinct - and you can ensure
information shared, especially of a
sensitive nature, is delivered in a way
that's not open for misinterpretation.
With the last two, the meeting
allows for open conversation that
incorporates each staffer's knowledge and experience. This not only
provides a multitude of resources
for addressing a company goal or
problem, but it can also develop a
sense of ownership among a team for
shared goals. This means when you
set the tone for collaboration, you
get more input for decision-making
and analysis, and you even allow
your team to disagree constructively,
which enhances creative problem
solving. What's more, even avionics shops are in the people business,
and your shop runs more effectively
when your people build relationships
with their co-workers, which comes
from spending time locked in the
same room together.
Plus, meetings can often do what
email can't. For example, email
lacks body language, tone of voice
and other factors that complicate
understanding, while allowing workers to hide behind a screen and be
their worst digital selves. This can
lead to email wars when two "colleagues" go head-to-head in an
inflammatory electronic battle of
wills that inevitably draws in their
bosses; in this case, they need to
meet face-to-face with adult supervision. In fact, they should have done
that sooner. This is even true in
cases where repeated emails aren't
getting the result you need.
That said, an email (or a good,
old-fashioned memo) is sometimes
a more efficient substitute, since

it doesn't require an employee to
interrupt the workday. But it's only
true for disseminating or requesting information that doesn't require
sensitivity, discussion, convincing,
clarifying or consensus building,
according to Steven Birmingham of
Harrisburg University of Science
and Technology. Some meetings can
be skipped in lieu of a digital communiqué, but research suggests that
email leaves a lot of room for misinterpretation and misdirection. You
should be wary when the medium
may corrupt the message you're trying to send.
