a transponder certification and hired
me to do it. After I was done, he
asked how it went, to which I replied
the transponder passed but the serial number came back as stolen. I
hardly knew this gentleman, and he
didn't seem too friendly. You could
imagine the look on his face. I didn't
wait too long to tell him I was kidding
and awaited his reaction. I feared
for my life for the millisecond before
he let go a huge belly laugh. At that
moment, I gained a friend for life.
I later went to Oshkosh, Wisconsin, as avionics editor for Private
Pilot Magazine in 1995. While I was
there covering the annual fly-in for

the magazine, I found an exhibitor
who was selling audio CDs of all
sorts of aircraft running and flying.
I bought a couple, as they were so
realistic you could almost smell the
exhaust. When I got back to Fremont, I hooked up a CD player to
my loud computer and selected a
track of a B-25 approaching from
approximately 20 miles. It went
from a whisper, and as it flew overhead, it almost rattled the rafters. I
did this during a break for anybody
who was in the terminal outside my
avionics shop. I left the door open,
started the playback, and sat down
at the table with the guys. It took a
while before you heard the engines
come nearer and nearer. One by
one, the guys stopped talking and

listened. Just as it appeared to fly
directly overhead, about half of
them ran outside and looked up,
hoping to see what it was. They
couldn't see anything but offered
various opinions on the breed of
aircraft. I wrote this story for Private Pilot, and later the man who
sold me the CDs told me the article wiped out his inventory.
Then, I sold the equipment and
control of the business, which was
moved to Muskegon, Michigan. Of
course, the moving day was in February in a blizzard. Our hangar was
blessed with a water leak inside, so
we had to watch for ice. We had to
go next door in all kinds of winter
weather to get water in a bucket to
flush the toilet. I proceeded to work
for the new owners until I reached
65 and retired.
My advice to young people? I
always said I could live and work
anyplace I chose with a good
knowledge of avionics. I highly
recommend it. Avionics has been
good to me, and I owe it to the
U.S. Air Force. I wouldn't change
a thing.
When I first worked in general
aviation avionics, there were only
a few shops, indicated by our repair station number of 235. They
were all strangers developing business plans by trial and error. Nobody talked to a competitor. Then
along came Mitchell and the AEA
who brought us together for the
good of all. The annual AEA International Convention and Trade
Shows were always a joy to attend.
You would see the latest toys, learn
from the seminars, and best of all,
you could talk to all your competitors as friends.
This account of my life is just
a brief recalling of memories. As
the saying goes, I could write a
book. q
