In May 2013, Genave Italiana helped equip the new base
of operations for the Italian Army's IV Reggimento Altair,
becoming a NATO supplier at the same time. The company
supplied the military base with new VHF and UHF (AM/
FM) base stations, installed new antennae on the roof, wired
external remote mics, and developed a power supply unit
with an automatic charger that continues to operate for up to
three days in the case of a blackout.
"We also furnished the South Tyrol's volunteer
firefighters with handheld radios, providing service when
they need it," Prast said. "We specialize in radio links and in
general terrestrial communications."
Success despite challenges
Like most avionics shops, Genave Italiana experienced a
downturn during the recent financial crisis.
"It was even worse in Italy due to the financial measures
taken by former Prime Minister Mario Monti, who
introduced a tax for privately owned airframes - about $1
U.S. per pound," Prast said.
Implemented in May 2012, the luxury tax on business
aircraft known as Salva Italia (Save Italy) is part of a series
of measures designed to reduce Italy's budget deficit.
Originally, the tax applied to private Italian-registered
aircraft and to foreign-registered aircraft that spend more
than 45 consecutive days in Italy.
Today, visiting aircraft are allowed to stay in the
country for a total of six months within a 12-month period
before being taxed on a pro-rated basis. Time spent in a
maintenance facility doesn't count toward the allowance.
The 2013 change has helped lessen the impact on the
general aviation industry.

"It led to a massive selling of airplanes and decreased
the general aviation market," Prast continued. "It has been
finally increasing over the last year."
Since opening, Genave Italiana has evolved by embracing
new technology, from LORAN in the 1980s to digital radios
in the 1990s to GPS in the 2000s and, most recently, glass
cockpits and touchscreens, according to Prast.
"A challenge that we are facing every decade is to
provide our customers the latest technology available," he
said. "Obviously, this is only possible when every part of
our staff stays up to date. We send our technicians to the
AEA Regional Meetings, general aviation fairs and dealer
training every year."
Pilots have changed throughout the years, too, according
to Prast, becoming more aware of new products as well as
their capabilities and pricing.
"Recently, we saw an interesting trend in touchscreen
avionics," he said. "Many pilots, most of them fly light
sport aircraft, want cameras inside and outside the aircraft
controlled remotely via iPads or smartwatches. We've also
seen increased interest in Bluetooth-enabled audio panels,
remote-controlled transponders and glass cockpits in the
last few years."
Prast is proud of his team's experience, dedication and
hard work.
"Our quality manager is a former civil aviation authority
(RAI/ENAC) inspector," he said. "Our engineering
manager has more than 20 years of experience in many
roles in different organizations. Our workshop technicians
are young but skillful, and hardworking with a great
knowledge of a large number of avionics components. One
of our employees is a former Lufthansa technician who
uses his experience to help with installations. Together,
we're able to provide our customers with exceptional
service every day." q
