What was the objective
of the project?
Modernize the Beech 1900D with
the Garmin G950 Integrated Flight
Deck, to bring a new level of situational awareness to the pilots and
eliminate avionics (EFIS 84) and
instrument obsolesce issues,
thereby extending the life of the
aircraft.

When was the project completed?
May 16, 2014
How was this installation unique?
AMI removed the entire instrument
panel, most of the wiring, and the
entire contents of the nose avionics
bay left and right side. AMI installed
the replacement equipment, new
shelves and 4,500 feet of wiring
that yielded a weight savings of 220
pounds. In addition, our instrument
panel design and disconnect system
enables a technician to remove the
entire instrument panel from the airplane and re-install it within one hour.
Did you encounter any problems
while working on the project?
We see it more as challenges
- working a complex STC project

like this with FAA/engineering involvement, 100 percent inspected conformity for parts/wiring/installation, vendor selection/quality control, Garmin
software design, fabrication and PMA
kitting were all challenges we encountered on this project.
How did you resolve these problems?
AMI's parent company, AeroMech Inc., is
an FAA STC ODA and provided an on-site
engineer for the duration of the project to
improve coordination and communication.
Project management and communication
between the fabrication shop, installers,
vendors and engineering was key.
What was the customer's response?
Our launch customer, SEARCA, was
extremely pleased and is now in the
process of modifying a fleet of 17 aircraft. Another customer, CemAir, ferried
a completed aircraft from AMI's shop in
Florida to South Africa. Upon landing at
home, the CEO provided this unsolicited
quote: "I am impressed with this system;
the display and integration is exceptional.
I flew into Dublin International in poor
weather, in congested airspace with many
heading, altitude, procedure and frequency
changes. The ease of use, well-thought
design, integration and clarity of presentation of information allowed me to fly the
aircraft single crew and no autopilot with
confidence, and to manage the workload
comfortably. That says a lot about the
upgrade." There is nothing better after an
involved project than a happy customer. q
