What was the objective
of the project?
We accomplished a similar installation in the aircraft owner's previous aircraft, a Mooney M20J a
year ago, and he wanted the same
capabilities in his "new" aircraft.
Systems installed included an
Aspen EFD1000 Pro PFD with
SV option, Garmin GDL 88, MidContinent TA102 USB charging

port, JP Instruments EDM700 and
Reiff engine preheat system.

What makes this
installation unique?
One unique feature was the addition
of custom hand-stitched leatherwrapped control yokes, which we
outsourced to Aero Comfort of San
Antonio, Texas. We also removed
a Quiet Flight Active Noise and
Vibration Cancelling system, which
coupled with the KCS-55A system
removal, gave the aircraft a significant gain in useful load.

AFTER

Did you encounter any problems
while working on the project?
We discovered after removing the
instrument panels that the wiring
for the previously installed GTN
was a mess and the nav/glideslope
antenna coupling to the GTN was
not done correctly. Also, the GTN
RS232 output was originally connected to RS232 IN 2 of the GTX
327, which did not allow the GTN to
control the transponder.
How did you resolve
these problems?
With all of the panels completely
removed, we were able to reposition
the avionics harnesses into a much
neater arrangement without a complete rewire. The existing antenna
coupler arrangement was removed
and replaced with the wideband coupler specified in the GTN installation
manual. The GTN RS232 was relocated
to the GTX 327 RS232 IN 1 port, which
allows the GTN both display and control of the transponder functions.
What was the customer's
response?
The customer was pleased that he
now has the Aspen display system
in his "new" aircraft with the addition of the synthetic vision option.
He appreciated the addition of
ADS-B In traffic and weather information on the GTN while the JPI
monitor allows him to more closely
monitor engine parameters. q
