GENESYS AEROSYSTEMS persists with proven products

his story is too short to get into the long and
involved histories of its two protagonists: S-TEC
Corp. and Sierra/Chelton Flight Systems. But
their backgrounds do set the stage for how they got to
where they are today.
S-TEC Corp. was founded in 1978, and grew to be
one of the largest suppliers
of general aviation fixedwing and rotorcraft autopilots
in the world. In fact, the
company recently celebrated
receiving its 1,500th Federal
Aviation Administration and
international supplemental
type certificate.
Founded in 1997, Sierra Flight Systems, later renamed
Chelton Flight Systems, developed the world's first
FAA-certified synthetic vision system and GPS/WAAS
navigation system. Today, the company's various EFIS,
Highway-In-The-Sky and special mission display systems
have been certified on more than 700 different types of
military and general aviation aircraft and helicopters.
Like so many other small companies with great vision
and ideas, both S-TEC and Chelton found themselves
being acquired by Cobham plc a few years ago. Like so
many other small companies acquired by a big company,

when the light of day appeared, the little companies just
didn't fit into the big company's future.
This is where Roger Smith, then president and general
manager of S-TEC and Chelton, and Rick Price and
Gordon Pratt, co-founders of Chelton Flight Systems,
come in. The team, along with Tammy Crawford, director
of finance, recently bought the two smaller companies
back from the big company and rebranded as Genesys
Aerosystems.
With all that activity, Avionics News caught up with
Smith, the company's president and chief executive
officer, and Jamie Luster, director of sales and marketing,
to get an update on what's happening with Genesys
Aerosystems.
How did Genesys Aerosystems come to be?
SMITH: It's a story that has become common in the
