My assignment was in the radio repair shop; it was
a snap. I was working on ARN-6 and -7 ADFs. The
shop had so much electronic interference, you couldn't
properly align the low-frequency radios. I convinced the
brass we needed a screened room. I was given approval to build one; it was beautiful and made alignment of
the ADFs easy. The screen was so new that it still had
the bright copper color. It was placed in a rear corner
of the shop. You could see outside the room through
the screen, but you couldn't see in it. All you could see
was the bright copper. I was able to do anything inside
without worrying about anyone seeing what I was doing.
When people approached, I assumed the position of
working on a set.
One of my other duties was to drive along the flight
line of T-33 two-seat jet trainers with a pickup and an air
compressor in the back checking the air pressure of all
the ARC-27 communication transceivers.

One day, an F-86 fighter landed at our base but was
unable to contact the tower. It landed with light signals.
The call came for anyone who knew anything about the
ARC-33 comm unit, and I proudly answered the call.
Nobody knew how to set the frequencies, but it was so
simple that I almost felt bad about doing it; however,
I did require the maintenance guys to put the safety
pin in the ejection seat. I did not want to go through
the canopy while working on a radio. With the safety
pin securely in place, I sat in the pilot's seat and slid a
springloaded locking pawl to the right, and the wholechannel frequency drum was slid from the control box.
All the channels were selected by sliding tabs at each
channel to their frequency; 246.55 MHz was selected by
the five tabs to their respective numbers - one at 2, one
at 4, one at 6, and so on. I was king of the shop for an
hour or two.
Then, I was promoted to maintaining the base's mobile control towers and received my third stripe.
These towers were mounted on 1.5-ton Ford flatbed
trucks. They were complete with gasoline-powered gen-
