oday's aircraft manufacturers take cues from the
automotive industry, from adopting the trade's product
development processes to creating unique, brand-aware
interior designs. For companies like Eugene, Oregon-based
Rosen Aviation, this means designing and building technology
for aircraft is now far more demanding, requiring more
flexibility and creativity, and requiring a bigger investment in
products.
"Previously, when we
developed a product, we
would go to customers in
the market and sell," said
Mark Cook, vice president
of sales and marketing for Rosen Aviation. "That has changed
in the last three years. Today, the OEMs want to differentiate
themselves. They don't want their product to look like someone
else's. OEMs are looking to their designers to create that
difference."
Primarily an OEM provider, Rosen Aviation designs,
develops and builds in-flight entertainment systems such as
high-definition flat panel displays, DVD players, control devices
and other cabin accessories. Its products are OEM-installed on
all Gulfstream aircraft, the Embraer Phenom 300 and Cessna
Citation XLS+, and are included in the Rockwell Collins Venue
CMS/IFE system and Honeywell Aerospace Ovation Select

certified repair station, with CAAC certification expected in the
fourth quarter of 2015.
"BMW's Designworks, for example, has won design awards
for multiple aircraft interior designs," Cook said. "It's another
way we're starting to see some of that automotive influence. The
OEMs are starting to design their aircraft interiors to be unique
to their DNA. And now we have to design our products to be
unique to their DNA, too."
To meet manufacturers'
desire to be different, Rosen
Aviation utilizes much of the
same electronic architecture
but changes the packaging.
"We design it to match the look and feel of the other
components in the aircraft - the cabinetry, seats and overall
styling," Cook said. "If you look at Gulfstream aircraft, the 650
for example, the styling and finish of the displays are totally
different than anyone else's; that is their DNA."
From cockpit to cars to high-speed rail
The company began in the 1980s when pilot John Rosen
started Rosen Product Development in his garage. He
created cockpit visors to enhance visibility. Later, Rosen
helped to pioneer articulating flat-panel LCD monitors in
the aircraft cabin.
"John was a very entrepreneurial individual," Cook said.
