Decide early

advises Michael Kus, founder and
director of Avionics 2000 Pty. Ltd.,

Remember what's at stake
Whether you're designing avionics,

Odom, avionics technician for Coastal
Helicopters in Panama City, Florida,
hopes you'll keep in mind what's at
stake. Odom faces that thought every
day as she services and maintains a
fleet of law enforcement aircraft.
"Aviation is the kind of industry that
becomes a passion," said Odom, who
has more than 20 years in the industry.
"It takes a special type of person who
can understand how important attention
to detail is. When I interview someone,
I ask, 'What's the most important thing
in any aircraft?' Most people say it's the
engine, the wings or the landing gear.
"I say, 'It's the souls.' When you
fill out a flight plan, they always ask
how many souls are on board. A World
War II pilot once told me the reason
they ask how many souls are on board
is because when something has gone
wrong, it's not the person per se, but
the soul that's important. That reaches
deep down in your heart. I always
ask, 'When you're done with a job,
will you fly in that aircraft yourself?
If you won't, you haven't done your
job. As pilot, mechanic or engineer,
you're responsible for all of the souls
on board." q
