ADS-B IN

miles horizontally, and between 3,500 feet above and 3,000 feet
below the host plane. TIS-B uses the extended squitter capability
of terminal Mode S radar, which carries both the surveillance data
from the position source, but also the traffic datalink required to
"uplink" this information to suitably equipped aircraft - aircraft
with ADS-B In and Out.
TIS-B surveillance data is derived from the same radar used by
ATC; this data is uplinked to the client aircraft on each radar scan
(nominally every five seconds). When aircraft pinged by a Mode S
radar are estimated to be within 34 seconds of a possible collision,
TIS-B alerts the pilot, regardless of distance or altitude. The range
of any target reported at greater than 7 nautical miles indicates only
that the specific target will be a threat within 34 seconds.
To be able to use what TIS-B broadcasts, both the client and
any intruder aircraft must be equipped with the appropriate cockpit
equipment and fly within the radar coverage of a Mode S radar
capable of providing TIS-B. Typically, this will be within 55
nautical miles of terminal Mode S radar sites.
It's all automatic. The pilot must do nothing but have the
equipment on.
ADS-B In: A solutions sampling
At press time, here are just a few examples of ADS-B In solutions
offered by AEA member companies; others are available in the
marketplace. Stay tuned for more options to be unveiled, and readers
might pay particular attention to the New Product Introductions
session on April 8, at the 58th annual AEA International Convention
& Trade Show as a possibility for this occurrence.
Appareo
Stratus: A portable solution is small enough to pocket-carry
between cockpits; delivers weather and traffic from both 978 MHz
and 1090 ES. To learn more, visit appareo.com/aviation/ads-b.
Aspen Avionics
Aspen offers single-band and dual-band solutions. Its dual band
ADS-B systems receive signals on both 978 MHz UAT and 1090
MHz. The transceiver models also transmit on 978 MHz. Dual band
ADS-B In ensures all ADS-B traffic targets with ADS-B Out are
received, especially when flying in areas of poor ADS-B ground
station coverage. For more information, visit aspenavionics.com.
Avidyne
MLB100 978MHz ADS-B Receiver: Avidyne's lightweight 978
MHz datalink receiver designed to pair with Avidyne displays for
receiving ADS-B traffic and FIS-B weather. To learn more, visit
avidyne.com/products/mlb100/index.asp.
BendixKing
KGX 150 and KGX 130: Last summer, BendixKing unveiled
two new 978 UAT transceivers, the KGX 130, designed for

aircraft operators seeking an In solution to complement an existing
ADS-B Out solution, and the KGX 150, which completes both
the Out and In equation with its integral WAAS GPS. To learn
more, visit bendixking.com/Company/News-Events/BendixkingAnnounces-New-Certified-Ads-b-Solutions.
FreeFlight Systems
RANGR 978: FreeFlight offers its FDL-978 package in three
flavors: -TX, a transmit only; -XVR, a transceiver that both transmits
and receivers; and -RX, a receiver only.
FTX-200 and FTX-250: Highly cost-effective 1090 ES ADS-B
transponders with integrated GPS. The FTX-250 adds an ADS-B In
datalink receiver to enable FIS-B weather display and text, along with
traffic on tablets. To learn more, visit freeflightsystems.com.
Garmin
Garmin Vantage, a family of existing ADS-B solutions designed
for a diverse number of aircraft and their operators, including
experimental, general aviation, helicopter, business and transport
category aircraft.
GDL 84: Introduced in October 2014, the GDL 84 is
another budget-oriented, one-box solution designed to meet the
FAA's ADS-B Out mandate, while also providing traffic and
subscription-free weather to mobile devices and sports its own
TSO'd WAAS GPS.
GDL 39: A portable solution for ADS-B In, the GDL 39 offers
a Bluetooth connection to pilots' iPads and Android devices along
with options like a backup battery, a hard-wire interface cable and
integral WAAS GPS.
GDL 88: Was the first dual-link solution for certified aircraft that
provided both a path to ADS-B Out compliance while also delivering
subscription-free weather and advanced traffic display to the cockpit.

L-3 Aviation Products
Lynx MultiLink Surveillance System: L-3 Aviation Products
officially launched its line of ADS-B products in February. The
NGT-9000 combines full ADS-B Out mandate compliance with the
free traffic and weather services provided via ADS-B In, and a color
moving map. ADS-B In features are included on the NGT-2000 and
NGT-2500 models, as well. To learn more, visit L-3Lynx.com.
NavWorx
ADS600-B: One of the lowest-cost solutions for ADS-B Out
and In, the ADS600-B is a remote 978 UAT Out solution with
an integral In receiver - and it can work with an existing WAAS
GPS navigator or an optional WAAS GPS module.
ADS600: For aircraft already sporting a 1090 ES ADS-B Out
solution, the ADS600 provides the full array of In features for a
low price.
PADS-B: A portable ADS-B transceiver with UAT Out and
dual-band ADS-B In for display on an iPad or iPhone as well
as Android devices with its integral Wi-Fi connection. To learn
