ACR Artex
ACR Electronics Inc. has enjoyed
a long and historic journey in the
aviation and space industry since
its inception in 1956, starting
with the launch of the 16 mm
Mark II space camera, the first
long-distance camera to be used
300 miles above the Earth, to
assisting the crew of Apollo 13 who
relied upon an ACR magnesiumpowered penlight designed for the
National Aeronautics and Space
Administration. When forced to
power down the spacecraft, the
ACR penlight provided the sole
source of light for the crew as they
struggled to get their capsule back
to Earth. In fact, all space vehicles
for the Mercury, Gemini, Apollo and
space shuttle program carried ACR
beacons and lights.
Around the same time, a new
avionics equipment distributor
was formed called Artex, which
quickly found a niche building
and distributing battery packs
for aviation emergency locator
transmitters. Not content with
simply providing the batteries, Artex
developed a complete ELT program
in the early 1990s that propelled the
business into becoming the preferred
ELT manufacturer on more OEM
aircraft than any other company.
Between 1998 and 1999, ACR
and Artex were both acquired by

Cobham plc for their unique
emergency distress product lines.
Working independently of one
another for more than 13 years, the
two prominent brands finally joined
forces to create the largest dedicated
lifesaving beacons company in
the world, ACR Electronics Inc.
Now privately owned and located
in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, the
company can leverage multiple
technology platforms and resources
to manufacture the world's best
lifesaving equipment for the ACR

and Artex product lines.
Since becoming one company, the
ACR and Artex brands have thrived
by integrating core capabilities.
The in-house engineering and
test laboratories have begun
