we started installing Garmin GPS 100s, and between 2000
and 2005, we were converting to Garmin radios," Dyk said.
"Our standard now is a Garmin audio panel, GNS 530/430, a
Garmin transponder, and a BendixKing KX-155 as a backup
nav/comm. All of the 206s have something similar to this."
"We fly a lot of IFR in the jungle," he continued, and MAF
policy requires weather detection equipment. Most of the
Cessnas have "a WX500 Stormscope or Strike Finder," Dyk
said, adding, "Most of the autopilots have been removed from
the smaller aircraft; we try to keep it as simple as possible."
BendixKing's KHF-950-series and some Collins units were
the main high-frequency avionics, but MAF is converting to
Codan NGT units. "It looks like a cellphone, and I thought
we'd never put it in an airplane, but almost all of them now
have one," he said. The reason extends well beyond the
reliability and quality of the Australian-made radio.
MAF requires uninterrupted radio communication from
takeoff to landing. Flights into the jungle are beyond VHF's
line of sight, so HF rules. "Nationals run the base stations
and set up the routes for flights into the interior," Dyk said.

Continuous communication not only tracks the airplane's
position, it allows it to divert to a village needing immediate
assistance. "HF is what makes our aircraft efficient."
Responding to emergencies, like the earthquake in Haiti,
is another reason MAF standardized the Codan, which can
tune in any high frequency. The United Nations and other
large agencies invariably use it for their HF communications
networks. After 9/11, U.S. government agencies realized that
satellite and other communication systems could be jammed,
said Dyk, "but HF can blast through almost everything;
they selected the Codan HF units because it encrypts the
transmissions, providing the necessary security these agencies
require." By using the same equipment, "we have all the
same access codes and tones" required to join the effort's
communication network. MAF uses ICOM equipment for
VHF FM networks.
Ultimately, MAF would like to phase out HF, but a suitable
and reliable replacement does not yet exist. Cellphone
coverage is slowly spreading across the continent, but there
are still too many holes in this network, he said. MAF also is
field testing a number of different position reporting systems
