In the decades since Michel started offering these
"front-end conversions" to digital controls and
features, owners of thousands of older aircraft found
these radios an affordable approach to upgrading their
most-basic of radios. Priced generally under $3,000,
the five minutes needed to pull the old and replace
with the new remains a value leader in NavComms.
Crystal-ball gazing
A view of the humble VHF NavComm's future
comes up short of warm and fuzzy, at least after
hearing from avionics-company insiders. "We're
focused on advancing versions of the all-in-one,"
said one expert. According to another executive,

"We have no plans to move into VHF NavComms
... as the ground stations shrink so goes the market,
accordingly."
Some seemed more open to WAAS-enhanced
versions of the GPS/Comm. First broached by
IIMorrow more than two decades ago, an IFR GPS/
Comm won significant popularity - until the all-in-one
came onto the scene.
But no one predicted the end of the original VHF-based
integrated avionics package, citing many foreign nation's
slower pace of change toward space-based area navigation
systems like GPS. For a large segment of pilots, a
functioning VOR receiver and the appropriate charts are as
much navigation equipment as they'll ever want - or need.
Even those die-hard VHF users will eventually die
off or convert, one old pilot and avionics-company
staffer observed. "The glideslope function alone will
help keep them viable - at least as long as we still
offer ILS at the airport." q
