ut of regulatory necessity, avionics manufacturers
and the repair stations that are their dealers are
symbiotic partners. One cannot survive without the
other. To aviate in America, aircraft must have equipment
that provides a predictable, reliable electromagnetic
connection to the communication, navigation and
surveillance network that makes the national airspace system
safe and efficient.
Guided by the technical standard orders that define
minimum performance requirements, manufacturers design
the necessary equipment. Earning TSO authorizations
approves the component's production, but not its installation
and use. Dealer networks of Part 145 avionics repair stations
sell and certificate the installation of their products.
Possessing a Part 145 certificate with the appropriate
avionics certifications is just one of the prerequisites for
becoming a dealer for any manufacturer. The shop also
must have the necessary tools, test equipment and trained
technicians, and the applicant must be in the right place.
To avoid market dilution, most manufacturers carefully
consider the geographic proximity of their dealers, unless
nearby dealers serve different markets, such as fixed-wing
and helicopters. Given these understandable geographic
constraints and the maturity of the avionics industry,
becoming a dealer for a specific manufacturer can be a
challenge.
