ket Report, total worldwide business and general aviation avionics sales for the year amounted to more than
$2.5 billion, $2,527,567,302.42, to be exact. That represents a 4-percent increase in sales compared to 2013, as
reported by the participating companies, and obviously
is good news. Also good news is that, barring an overall
economic slump, all indicators are that the existing recovery throughout the aviation industry - from airlines
to primary flight training - is forecast to continue during the next several years, according to authorities like
Boeing and the Federal Aviation Administration.
The shape of that recovery may change, however,
something reflected in 2014's data: Of 2014's total
avionics sales, 51.4 percent came from the forward-fit
market, avionics equipment installed by airframe manufacturers during an aircraft's original production. That's
down slightly from 2013's data, which saw 54 percent
of the avionics industry's sales go to the forward-fit
market. The retrofit market, meanwhile - avionics
equipment installed after original production - amounted to 48.6 percent of total sales for 2014, up from
2013's 46 percent market share.
The changing market allocations likely result from
growing demand for ADS-B equipment to retrofit inservice aircraft. In fact, the FAA's own data show slightly more than 9,100 aircraft had equipped at the end of
2014 to comply with the 2020 mandate. That's in stark
contrast to the agency's estimate that between 100,000
to 160,000 general aviation aircraft in the U.S. will
equip with ADS-B by 2020, with additional installations
