result of leveraging the company's
engineering expertise and manufacturing processes between several of
its facilities.
Despite its seemingly recent
roots, L-3 traces its heritage back to
the avionics division for Learjet in
Grand Rapids, Michigan, circa 1962.
The Learjet family's success clearly
can be attributed, at least in part, to
those early days. Today, the company
provides a wide array of avionics
technologies designed to improve
situational awareness and enhance
aviation safety, and has been a pioneer in developing collision avoidance, lightning detection and standby
systems for a wide range of aircraft
and operators. In recognition of its
continuing service to the avionics
industry, L-3 Aviation Products was
presented with the AEA Associate
Member of the Year for 2015.
Perhaps the association's most
coveted honor, the AEA's Lifetime
Achievement Award is presented to
an individual chosen by its board
of directors. For 2015, Gary Kelley
was the honoree, in recognition of
his countless hours of volunteerism
for the association, including his
service as a board member and his
leadership on the AEA's Future
Studies Report, a strategic plan developed in the mid-1990s.
Kelley got his start in the avion-
ics industry with King Radio, now
BendixKing. He left King in 1992,
perhaps choosing to embrace an
entrepreneurial spirit, and joined
a relatively small startup company
now known as Garmin International.
In his initial role as director of marketing, he oversaw the company's
developing sales, support and advertising strategies in its earliest days.
He also served as director of Garmin
Europe from 1993 to 2004. In those
positions, he was instrumental in
establishing the company's relationships with dealers throughout the
world, helping make Garmin the
industry leader it is today.
Kelley retired from Garmin International in December 2011 as vice
president of marketing, where he led
