Cobham AvComm
Cobham AvComm - formerly Aeroflex - designs, develops, manufactures and markets a diverse range of microelectronic, and test and measurement devices for a wide variety
of industrial applications. Guy
Hill, director of the
company's avionics
test product line,
introduced Cobham
AvComm's latest entry into that
market, the ATC5000NG transponder test set. It's an
RF signal generator/
receiver for testing
Cobham's ATC-5000NG
transponder test set
Mode A, C and S transponders. Intended for
engineering development, design validation, manufacturing and return-to-service test applications, the new product
replaces the Aeroflex legacy SDX-2000 and the ATC-1400A/
S-1403DL test rigs.
The bad news is those products have reached the design
limit of the hardware associated with them and are not
capable of performing testing to meet DO-260B or DO-282
requirements. They're not upgradeable - but they're still
supported - and components used in their design no longer
are in production. The good news, according to Cobham
AvComm, is the ATC-5000NG's software-defined radio
architecture supports more transponder test capabilities under
RTCA DO-181E than the legacy products it replaces. It also
includes new capability needed for testing under the FAA's
NextGen requirements for ADS-B and UAT.
The ATC-5000NG employs a 10.4-inch touchscreen LCD
display for operator control of all test set capabilities and
supports multiple international calibration and performance
standards, including ATCRBS/Mode S, DO-181E, DO-260,
DO-260A, DO-260B, UAT and DO-282B. Additional features built into the ATC-5000NG include multireceiver
capability, plus full diversity testing. An enhanced measurement ability - including pulse rise-and-fall times - and an
interrogation table mimicking the original SDX-2000's capabilities also are aboard. In addition to its new ATC-5000NG
transponder test set, Cobham AvComm also has what Hill
labeled as new ADS-B and TAWS test solutions for platform
installations.

DMA-Aero
DMA-Aero has
been in the business
DMA-Aero's MPS49
of manufacturing
multiport air data test set
test equipment
since 1938. Today,
the company offers a diverse array of products including flyby-wire flight control surface movement analyzers, tachometer
test sets, tilt tables and other equipment used in more than 80
countries worldwide. At the AEA Convention, Rob Knowles,
president, introduced attendees to DMA-Aero's newest offering, the MPS49 multiport air data test set. It is a totally RVSMcompliant and fully automatic air data test set, including calibration and leak testing capabilities for aircraft equipped with
both standard pitot-static probes and so-called "smart" probes
incorporating angle-of-attack sensors.
The new instrument is physically similar to the one it
replaces, the MPS45, but the MPS49 is a "true" independent
three-channel tester, according to the company, and sports several improvements over the earlier device. For example, at 33
pounds, it weighs significantly less than the earlier instruments.
Its built-in rechargeable battery can operate the device for up to
two hours and is front-panel removable, but the unit can operate without the battery if AC power is available. It also features
a larger, color touchscreen display than previous models and
incorporates a keyboard for easy use.
The MPS49 includes isolation capability for multiple air data
and AoA ports, generating independent calibration and leak
testing for each "smart" probe. Calibration itself is performed
via the instrument's keypad or touchscreen, and no mechanical
adjustments are required. The unit's recommended calibration
cycle is 18 months, helping reduce ownership costs. Remote
controlled multiport switching and the ability to drive up to 12
outlets - four static, four pitot and four AoA ports - is standard
equipment. Additional features include a 5,000-hour warranty
on internal pumps, a USB port, an encoding altimeter option,
and Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and IEEE 488 GPIB interfaces.

FreeFlight Systems
One of the challenges confronting the avionics industry
is how to equip the thousands of U.S. aircraft needing an
approved ADS-B Out solution in advance of the FAA's 2020
deadline. Despite a wide range of product offerings from many
manufacturers and industry efforts to address cost and product
selection issues, aircraft owners seem to be taking a wait-andsee attitude when it comes to making decisions on how and
when to equip. Recognizing that ADS-B cost issues are hampering installations, FreeFlight Systems announced its Equip-It
