Shadin Avionics
Shadin Avionics specializes in the design, manufacture, support and distribution of air data, fuel flow, engine trend monitoring and other instrumentation for turbine- and piston-powered fixed-wing and rotor-wing aircraft for the military and the
general and corporate aviation markets. The company's latest
offering is the USB-based recorder upgrade for the company's
existing engine trend monitoring equipment.
The new upgrade is available for more than 1,000 ETM
devices aboard more than 40 aircraft models and elimShadin Avionics'

itself. The new upgrade
is TSO'd, is a plugand-play replacement for

lowers overall costs of engine trend monitoring, according to the company. The upgrade stores
thousands of hours of data and allows more frequent engine
parameter sampling than what it replaces.
Shadin also brought its RemoteFlo fuel-flow instrument
to the AEA Convention. The RemoteFlo has a retail price of
$2,500 and provides the company's industry-standard fuel
flow management tools in a behind-the-panel solution. The
RemoteFlo requires no panel space and enables Shadin fuel
flow data to be added to a primary or secondary flight display
supporting ARINC 429 and/or RS-232 data transfers. It weighs
less than a pound and also is TSO'd.

SmartSky Networks
SmartSky Networks is a next-generation communications
provider bringing what it calls the first airborne 4G LTE-based
wireless network to the aviation market. SmartSky plans to

beta-launch its air-to-ground network, SmartSky 4G, in late
2015, followed by the rollout of nationwide commercial service
in 2016. The company said SmartSky 4G will provide more
than 10 times the typical speed and capacity of networks currently available on the market.
According to the company, that kind of airborne bandwidth
results from three key ingredients. The first is a "patented 4G
LTE-based technology with beamforming," allowing the network to target each participating aircraft, even in congested
airspace. Second, SmartSky 4G uses a real-time, ground-based
network, eliminating frustrating latency characteristics of

satellite-based systems. It also makes the network scalable and
affordable when compared to space-based systems. Third, the
company said it has "cracked the code" on ways to reuse available spectrum, resulting in a 60-MHz-wide "pipe" to and from
the aircraft, which is 15 times that available from competitors,
according to the company. The result, according to SmartSky,
is a robust in-flight experience, enabling multiple passengers
to do anything they want, simultaneously, including live video
conferences and movie streaming.
SmartSky also announced Kontron as a technology connectivity partner. Kontron's addition as a SmartSky-approved partner
gives customers a greater choice in selecting their preferred cabin
Wi-Fi access point hardware for connecting to SmartSky 4G,
the company said. Kontron installations are aboard a variety of
aircraft, from business jets to the Airbus A330 and Boeing 767s,
and the company is a well-established and proven supplier to the
aviation industry. SmartSky said its partnership with Kontron will
allow it to offer an affordable, yet highly capable, next-generation
CWAP option.
