First, we're more creative
surrounded by moderate
levels of ambient noise,
according to research from
the University of Chicago,
because it encourages
abstract thought. Second,
color affects how we
think; blues and greens
help us generate more
ideas, according to several
studies. Dim lights also
increase creativity, as does
working at low-energy
times of the day; your mind
is more likely to wander
randomly when you're tired
- potentially right onto an
idea you wouldn't otherwise
consider.
Reimagine situations. To
find innovative solutions,
Art Markman, author of
Smart Thinking, suggests
rephrasing problems in
multiple ways to give your
brain more entry points.
Expand your thinking by
delving into the essence of
the problem you're facing,
and consider who else has
faced this situation in the
past; their solution may
provide inspiration for
yours.
Seek advice. Find someone
to help you think through
a problem, especially
someone outside your
normal inner circle. Pick
a mentor or other business
owners, favorite customers,
or even the UPS delivery
driver, who meets a
wide variety of business
owners along the route.
Your employees can be
helpful, too; they know
your shop from a different
perspective, so include them

in brainstorming sessions to
get fresh insight. If nothing
else, hang a piece of paper
in a common area, and ask
for anonymous responses
to questions, issues or
opportunities.

Whatever you choose to try,
doing anything new will give you
the boost to think differently about
your problem. That's fundamentally
what creativity is all about, and we
don't need a study to tell us where
we can go from there. q
