the school' s two-year Aviation Technician- Avionics
M aintenance program. H eld at Fanshawe College' s
Centre for Applied Transportation Technology, the
avionics maintenance program has since grown to 40
students but has a capacity to handle 80.
" Our avionics students learn in well-eq uipped,
state-of-the-art facilities, including a classroom with
lab, radio lab, fabrication lab and a 5 0,000-sq uarefoot hangar," said James M allory, program coordinator
and professor, who co-founded the program with Y van
Gagne, lab technologist and professor.
Students learn to service, repair and maintain
aircraft electrical and electronics systems, including
communication, navigation and data systems. After
completing the program, students receive 1 8 months
of approved basic training credit toward the 48 months
of ex perience req uired to obtain a Transport Canada
Aircraft M aintenance Engineer license in the " E"
category.
The college ensures students have the tools and
eq uipment they need throughout their education. Firstyear students receive a toolbox containing all of the
basic hand tools req uired for their basic electricity,
electronics and radio theory training. The school also
supplies each student with a bench eq uipped with
air and hand tools utiliz ed in the aircraft structures
component of the avionics maintenance program.

tooling to perform aircraft avionics maintenance on the

flight line and in the hangar. They also receive industry
standard pitot-static, navigation, communication and
ATCR BS test eq uipment for both flight line and bench
testing scenarios.
" Tool control is a common theme emphasiz ed
throughout the program, and having the students be
responsible for school property helps put them in the
right mindset from the beginning," M allory said. " W ith
a max imum of 20 students in each lab, there is always
enough eq uipment to go around."
Newest additions
In the fall of 201 3, Fanshawe College added the
Aviation Technician- Aircraft M aintenance program,
starting with 40 students. The two-year degree program
covers all aspects of aircraft maintenance for fix edwing and rotary-wing aircraft.
Further ex panding its Aircraft Structural R epair
program and student housing, Fanshawe College
purchased an 80,000-sq uare-foot hangar and office
building at the London International Airport in 201 3.
P reviously operated by Jaz z Aviation, a regional and
charter airline, the facility provides space for nearby
John P aul II H igh School' s H igh Skills M aj or Aviation
program, as well as the Aircraft Structural R epair
program operated in partnership between Fanshawe and
Sault College since 2009.
