Schmidt talks about his company' s family
of products, he refers first to the capabilities
shared by its members. Altitude, airspeed, air data
and attitude are, perhaps, the tax onomy of technology
that better define the era of digital avionics. This
classification of capabilities ex tends to the categories
under which the company organiz es its products -
Aviate, Communicate, and
Navigate - and its philosophy
of product development, " take
what we have and enhance it
with another product."
" W hen Garmin came out
with the GNS 430/ 5 30, it
was a game-changer in the
industry as far as technology
and capabilities are concerned," he said. Garmin
started shipping the 430 around 1 997, the year Schmidt
founded Sandia Aerospace in Albuq uerq ue, New
M ex ico. " W e intended to start with a transponder
and encoder, but the transponder took longer than we
anticipated, so we ended up with the encoder," he said.
The technology in the SAE 5 -35 provided the altitude
capability for Sandia' s family of products.
" The 430/ 5 30 have some capabilities you couldn' t
use without an air data computer," he ex plained.

One ex ample is the winds aloft feature that gives
wind direction and velocity, " which is nice to know,
especially when going to a nontowered airport," he
said. " W e' d already done altitude, so we' d have to
do airspeed. Combining the two gave us full air data,
which works very well." To complete the inputs for the
SAC 7-35 air data computer, Sandia developed the STP
78 to provide the outside air temperature.
" W e still wanted to do the
transponder," Schmidt said.
In today' s airspace, most
transponders need an altitude
encoder. W ith that technology
already in hand, Sandia built
it into its STX 1 6 5 panelmounted transponder and the
remotely mounted STX 1 6 5 R .
Taking the nex t step, the company' s engineers added an
OAT input. W ith that data, the transponder adds density
altitude and icing alerts to its display of the pressure
altitude being reported to air traffic control. Compatible
with AD S-B, the transponder also includes three timers,
elapsed flight time, and count-up and count-down
timers.
Adding attitude to altitude and air data gave life to
the SAI 340 Q uattro, which Sandia introduced a year
ago. " W e' ll submit it for certification this summer,"
