Jesse Beard of Pentastar Aviation

than 50 years, the company has
been a leader in the world of
business aviation servicing regional
and global travelers out of its
headquarters at Oakland County
International Airport.
Recently, Patricia Luebke spoke
with Jesse Beard to learn more
about his work at Pentastar
Aviation as well as his life outside
the office.

entastar Aviation was
established in 1964 as the
internal flight department
for the Chrysler Corp. based at
Willow Run Airport in Ypsilanti,
Michigan. In response to evolving
travel requirements, the company
expanded its operations to include
management, aircraft consulting,
aircraft maintenance, avionics
services, interior services, FBO
services and private jet charter
operated through Pentastar
Aviation Charter Inc.
In 2001, Pentastar Aviation was
purchased by Edsel B. Ford II, a
lifelong aviation enthusiast, who
added his family's legacy and love
of flying to the already remarkable
Pentastar Aviation story. For more

With...

You are an avionics
engineering manager
at Pentastar Aviation.
What does that entail?
It is an open-ended job
description. I oversee the
engineering department in
our day-to-day activities. I
also work with our sales and
marketing teams researching
future opportunities in cabin
and flight deck avionics.

What's a typical day for you?
My day usually starts around 7
a.m. I attend a daily production
meeting at 9:30 a.m. every day
where the leaders of the various
departments review plans and
projects that are scheduled in the
near future. We also discuss the
flight and maintenance schedules
of our managed customers and

charter department.
Depending on current project
needs, I may have direct contact
with the aircraft director of
maintenance or communicate
through our project coordinator
daily about updates on their
project. I am involved in
tracking the progress of the
aircraft modification, providing
support during all stages of the
modification, and after aircraft
delivery.
What were you like
growing up?
I grew up in Goshen, New
York, and I liked anything
electronic. I would fix broken
VCRs, for example, and always had
electronics as a hobby since I was
young. I went into a vocationaltechnical program in high school
for electronics - it was basic
analog through digital circuits
design and repair. The program
was very interesting to me, and
I excelled at it. This set me up
for my enlistment in the military
focusing on avionics.
After high school, I served a
five-year enlistment in the Marine
Corps from 1997 through 2002.
My basic training was in Paris
Island, North Carolina. Following
that, I was stationed in NAS
(Naval Air Station) Pensacola,
Florida, for my basic electronics
and aviation training. After that,
