AEA SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS

Leon Harris/Les Nichols Memorial Scholarship to
Spartan College of Aeronautics and Technology
Christopher Almanza of Forest Hill, Texas,
has been interested in the field of electronics
since his childhood. He plans to pursue his
dream of becoming an avionics technician by
earning the associate of applied science degree
in aviation electronics. Almanza wants to stay
close to his hometown once he graduates.
Marshall Temple Memorial Scholarship
Rand Mills of Henefer, Utah, plans to pursue a
career maintaining helicopters and/or general
aviation aircraft. After graduating from Salt
Lake Community College, he would like to
find employment in Montana, Alaska or New
Mexico. Mills also is a recipient of the Northrop
Rice Snap-on scholarship and has been in the Utah Army
National Guard for more than five years.
Mid-Continent Instruments and Avionics Scholarship
Jonathan James of Duncanville, Texas, is
currently attending Tarrant County College
in pursuit of his airframe and powerplant
certificate. James plans to complete his
associate of applied science degree and
then complete the aviation maintenance and
electronics technology program that focuses on avionics.
James also would like to complete the NCATT AET
certification. James was a former helicopter mechanic
in the U.S. Army Reserve and an employee of Boeing
working on the 747-800.
Monte Mitchell Memorial Scholarship
Curtis Abrahamson of Grantville, Georgia, is the
second recipient of this scholarship honoring Monte
Mitchell's service of more than 40 years to the Aircraft
Electronics Association. Abrahamson received a full
registration to attend the 2015 AEA International
Convention & Trade Show in Dallas, Texas, which
included travel and hotel expenses.

The Stone Foundation Scholarship
Bryan Miller of Fort Worth, Texas, spent
13 years in the U.S. Marine Corps as an
electrical systems technician on F/A-18
and F-35 aircraft. He is enrolled in Tarrant
County College with the intent of obtaining
a mechanic certificate with an A&P rating
and an associate degree in airframe maintenance and
electronics technology. A dean's list student, he also
serves as a tutor in the program and would like to
work in business aviation for Gulfstream, Embraer or
Bombardier after graduation. Eventually, Miller would
like to have his own inspection and repair business.
Tom Taylor Memorial Scholarship to Spartan College of
Aeronautics and Technology
Zach Evans of Genoa City, Wisconsin, has
been working on friends' and neighbors'
cars, as well as taking extra classes in
math, small engines and metals, to better
prepare him for his career in aviation
maintenance. Evans placed third in the state of Wisconsin
for the SkillsUSA automotive service technology contest
and third in Automotive Dealers Association of Mega
Milwaukee. Evans was offered several automotive
scholarships but turned them down to pursue a career
in aviation maintenance. After completing the program
at Spartan College, he plans to gain employment at an
aircraft service company or work for an airline.
Universal Avionics Systems Corp. Scholarship
Ed Kolb of Riverside, California, has been
restoring vintage aircraft for the last few
years and has worked as an apprentice at a
repair shop. Kolb plans to attend Chaffey
College's aviation maintenance technician
program, earn his A&P certificate and find
work for a large aviation company. Ultimately, he would
like to open his own shop at a smaller airport. q
