DRAWING THE ADS-B DIFFERENCE
Continued from page 25

As space allowed, the avionics would be stacked in the
center of the panel, with the resulting openings covered.
When the work was complete, the Twin Comanche would
be certified for precision and nonprecision GPS IFR
approaches, according to Cook, but not LPV approaches
because the airplane would have only one GPS receiver.
And it would meet the 2020 ADS-B Out mandate.
Working with an avionics shop with experience installing
the IFD540 would have been nice, said Cook, but being
one of the first purchasers of the system, which started
shipping in late 2014, that really wasn't an option. In the
end, it came down to two shops. Premier Avionics of Fort
Wayne, Indiana, got the install because it was able to fulfill
another RFQ request: "To minimize the loss of use during
good flying weather, we desire an installation time frame of
mid-January to mid-February 2015. Total down time should
not exceed three weeks without prior approval." Said Cook,
"It was all a matter of timing."
During the past couple of years, Premier has installed
roughly three dozen ADS-B solutions, often in conjunction
with a GPS WAAS upgrade, according to Brian Paugh, who
started the shop in 2010 with another technician who is now
the repair station's avionics manager. In 2014, Premier's
six technicians installed twice the number of ADS-Bs they
installed in 2013. As of June 2015, he said, "We've already
done as many ADS-B installs as we did in all of 2014."
Most of them are Garmin GDL 88 systems, because his
customers' aircraft are equipped with Garmin 430/530 or
650/750 WAAS GPS navigators.
Cook's Twin Comanche was the shop's first Avidyne
IFD540 install, according to Paugh. The only real
complication was the airworthiness directive on the box,
which Avidyne addressed with a software upgrade that
also added some new capabilities. "Because it was our
first one, it took a little longer, but we wanted to make sure
every aspect worked as the manufacturer intended," said
Paugh, emphasizing that the project was not an upgrade or
replacement of an existing system but the installation of a
new stack that delivered 21st century capabilities.
"We stripped out all the wiring for the equipment we
removed, replaced it with new wire and cable and did a
complete integration and function test" that examined every
capability the new system offered. "Initially, we wanted to
install the 540 higher in the stack, but we had to work with
the room the panel gave us," said Paugh. Still, "after we
pulled everything out, there's a lot of room left for future
upgrades."

Since completing Cook's stack, Paugh said Premier
Avionics has completed two more Avidyne IFD540 ADS-B
installations, "and we have a complete Avidyne system
purchased for the MLB100, but the equipment is not here
yet because they just started shipping the 100," Avidyne's
ADS-B In box.
"The install went exceptionally well," said Cook, who
complimented Premier on its quality of work and for
going above and beyond the expected customer care.
Given some shipping delays and a few other challenges,
there were a few days of delay on the project's three-week
time frame, during which the Twin Comanche's annual
expired. "Premier coordinated a ferry permit at no extra
cost, and they threw in a full IFR certification," Cook said.
"We couldn't be happier with the installation."
The Twin Comanche is not wired for the addition of
the MLB100 because its partners all fly with Apple iPads
with ForeFlight's electronic flight bag. A Stratus receiver
delivers ADS-B In's free flight and traffic information.
This combination gives the partners all of the necessary
charts as well as advanced flight planning capabilities, so
the IFD540 only uses its base navigation database. "We
back up our iPads with iPad Minis and iPhones," Cook
said.
Cook, now 48, started flying at the flying club at the
Osan Air Force Base in South Korea. Serving seven years
as an enlisted advanced electronics technician, he earned
his pilot certificate at the Buckley Air National Guard
Base in Colorado and rented flying club airplanes at Air
Force flying clubs as temporary duty assignments sent him
around the world. Now a technical consultant for online
systems that manage corporate users and customers, he
flies in for business and pleasure, and that is what led
him to the Twin Comanche partnership six years ago.
"Michigan is surrounded by the Great Lakes, and flying
over them in a single-engine airplane is something you
don't want to do, especially in winter."
"Effusive" best describes Cook's airborne assessment
of the ADS-B system. "I'm thrilled with the performance.
I just made a flight to Pella, Iowa, and the situational
awareness, seeing the other Mode C traffic on the iPad
before ATC calls it out is just amazing! It is amazing how
much clearer the traffic picture becomes when you can
see everyone within a 20-mile radius. I've been telling my
partners in the Cardinal that we need to get going on this."
As he led the charge on equipping the Twin Comanche
so it would comply with the 2020 ADS-B Out mandate,
there is no doubt that Cook will be researching the more
affordable solutions for the Cardinal at a future EAA
AirVenture. q
