certification and ANAC certification for Brazil, and of course,
EASA. We also are doing a lot of work for Boeing, Lockheed
Martin and Honeywell.
We're doing a lot more helicopter work. We're not doing as
much general and business aviation as we had, but we certainly
do work in those segments. Our strongest segment in that area
has been gyro exchange for business aircraft and jets. That's a
business we want to continue to grow.
Miner: There have been many changes in technology
during the past five years. Because of this, the attitude gyros
that were once primary are being repositioned to standby
units or being removed altogether. Newer, solid-state units,
such as our own MD302 are being installed now.
Nonetheless, we continue to service gyros, altimeters and
autopilot units, and our avionics business continues to grow as
we add new capabilities including weather radars and ELTs.
Joubert: I remember when I started the business, and
what we now call legacy equipment was all brand new.
Now, we're tasked with finding solutions to keep many of
those units going. Some are new processes specifications
we've developed to manufacture replacement parts for units
that the OEMs are no longer supporting.
We actually have manufacturing authorization now, so
we're making many of those parts. Along with that, we're

finding our growth in other areas, such as helicopters,
military, air carriers and a growing air cargo business. Lots
of those retired regional airliners are finding new lives as
cargo aircraft now, and they need sources for fixing their
legacy avionics.
What impact has the growth of panel integration had on
your stand-alone instrument business?

Semerjibashian: The stand-alone instrument business
will continue to decline. For the most part, that's due to the
glass display, and OEMs providing their own sensors. We
have had some interest from some of those manufacturers
to use our backup EPU with some of their systems.
Delman: Some people are concerned that the stand-alone
instrument business is getting lost in panel integration;
however, you have to remember that the indications for
those displays come from many analog and mechanical
devices, like the attitude and directional gyros and pressure
transducers that we've been repairing for years. We see that
repair business continuing to grow. While the pilot sees
a new display, what goes on behind the panel has stayed
much the same, especially with older aircraft.
Joubert: Obviously, aircraft owners who choose new glass
displays, that equipment is no longer serviced at facilities
like ours. The manufacturers have a lock on all that kind of
work. So the repair side of new avionics is going away.
On a positive note, it's creating new opportunities to find
solutions to support the legacy avionics, and that is a winwin for our customers and our company.
There is a perception that shops that work on the legacy
equipment are having a hard time of it. Does that business
present challenges? Yes. But if you are prepared and
committed to finding solutions to your customers' needs,
then you can be very successful.
Do you see legacy instrument repairs becoming a bigger
part of your business going forward?

Semerjibashian: Repairs are a big part of our business
already, but there are still months when our instrument
sales outperform our repairs side. We're constantly adding
capabilities in our shop. In the past, you'd buy several types
of test equipment and wait for the work to come.
Now it's more about having the demand first, then
verifying that it is truly a viable opportunity, and then
buying the equipment and training your people to meet it.
Instrument repair is no longer an "if you build it they will
come" type of business.
