refresher course coordinators who oversee the acceptance
process. The change eliminates the need for OEMs to actually submit their courses. The FAAST team will no longer be
providing or maintaining a list of accepted course numbers for
IA renewal courses that meet the intent of 8900.1 Volume 3,
Chapter 56, Paragraph 3-4518(B)(4).
All FSDOs and IFOs will accept, without additional
FAA review or further showing, maintenance technical
training conducted by a manufacturer or its authorized
representative on its type certificate; supplemental type
certificate; technical standard order; or parts manufacturer approval product, component, or accessory for the
purpose of IA renewals. These entities, however, must
meet all the training requirements of this section with the
exception of submitting for acceptance and obtaining a
refresher course acceptance number.
The key phrase is the last; "These entities (OEMs) must meet
all the training requirements of this section." The OEMs can help
individuals seeking IA renewal and their dealers satisfy their
training program requirements by following the simple training
course requirements outlined in the aforementioned order. To
conform, download the order online at fsims.faa.gov and scroll to
the section titled "Initial Request for Course Acceptance" where
you will find the checklist for building your training course and
details on what to include on your training certificates (per the
example in Figure 3-169). For repair stations with employees interested in IA refresher, they can still receive credit for attending
AEA Regional Meetings and the AEA Convention but will now
be looking to the OEMs to have proper documentation to support
their training. For repair station technicians, we have a universally accepted means of documentation for repair station training
and ultimately some consistency in what to expect from training
courses and providers.
Since the AEA's repair station training program briefings a
decade ago, we have seen substantial growth in training offerings. The courses at AEA headquarters have multiplied and
matured; the AEA Convention has more training hours than
ever before; the OEMs are adding their own dealer training
programs; and we are seeing more online options each year.
With emerging technologies and new markets for aircraft
electronics, we will continue to see growth in all training
options. All of this is good news for the avionics technician
profession and will certainly continue to satisfy your evolving training requirements. With the AEA Regional Meetings
season underway, we hope to see you in attendance fulfilling your training program requirements and will be happy to
