ESI -500: COVERING NEW TERRAIN IN
ELECTRONIC STANDBY INSTRUMENTS
As a stand-alone, compact PFD-like instrument, the ESI-500
delivers the most-popular new feature for PFDs of all stripes.
Synthetic Vision, or SynVis as L-3 called it, isn't the only
enhancement in the newest Genesis standby stack. But it does
make it stand out in the crowd a bit more as arguably the most
dramatic step up in this arena.
"L-3's Genesis ESI-500 is an advanced standby
system for the piston, turboprop and light jet markets," said Larry Riddle, L-3 Aviation Products
vice president of marketing and sales for
general aviation. "Its feature set and
price range are exactly what smaller
airplane and helicopter owners have
been waiting for."
Integral to the ESI-500 is its selfcontained database, which, with the
reference from compatible position source,
lets this Genesis map new terrain for the genre. In the process,
the ESI-500 serves up an option that might appeal to pilots
with highly capable analog panels who want to simplify their
panel's systems redundancy while adding new capabilities.
First, some basics.
L-3 designed the ESI-500 to install in a standard instrument
cutout with a 3-inch round case; for the majority of aircraft originally equipped with analog instruments, this means the instrument can go into a spare or vacated instrument slot.
Internally, an L-3 database drives the synthetic vision graphics
- and with all the bells and whistles a pilot could desire. The rich
color display aids in terrain alerting and obstacle identification.
L-3 designed the ESI-500 specifically for Class I, II and
III Part 23 aircraft and Part 27 helicopters. It features a 3-inch
display that incorporates synthetic vision, obstacles, terrain alerting and navigation. L-3's ESI-500 is compatible with existing
navigation and GPS equipment, facilitating ease of installation
To reference the SynVis capabilities the ESI-500 needs: a
heading reference, available from either the company's optional
MAG-500 magnetometer or an Arinc 429 heading source; info
from a GAMA 429-formatted Arinc 429 GPS source; and an
outside air temperature input from either the available OAT
probe or an Arinc 429 source.
With its high-resolution display, the ESI-500 includes all the
stock-in-trade of a PFD: altitude; airspeed; vertical speed; slip/
skid; and attitude, all self-determined. An Arinc 429 interface
provides navigation input data to drive localizer and glideslope
L-3 made the air-data sensors integral to the Genesis ESI-500,
as are the pitot and static-system inputs on the back of the unit.
All the important V speeds can be programed into the unit during
its installation, providing the ESI-500 airspeed tape with appropriate alerts for Vne and Vmo.
The pilot selects English or metric readouts for altitude, altimeter and vertical speed.
With the optional MAG-500 magnetometer installed, the ESI500 also offers a magnetic-heading display.
All of these functions remain independent of the ship's power,
thanks to an integral Lithium-ion battery. L-3 guarantees
one hour of operating time from the battery, but the
power pack generally keeps the ESI-500 operating for
two to three hours.
The ESI-500 is priced at about $6,000.
Options include synthetic vision, $1,333;
nav data, $667; and magnetometer and
install kit, $1,567. L-3 recently received
FAA TSO authorization and expects the
unit to be installable under an approved
model list STC for a variety of aircraft
models, coming within the next few weeks.
"When pilots view the vibrant display, they'll be impressed
by the amount of data that is available in this class of standby,"
Riddle added. "L-3's 40 years of standby technology and experience culminate in the Genesis ESI-500."
ESI -500 EXPANDS L-3'S STANDBY
The Genesis ESI-500 joins a robust lineup of electronic
standby instrument systems from L-3, options covering Part 23,
Part 25 and Part 27 aircraft.
In late 2013, L-3 unveiled the Trilogy ESI in two packages
- the Trilogy ESI-1000 and Trilogy ESI-2000. L-3 aimed the
4-inch-by-3-inch package at the market for standby instrument
packs with a solid-state, color-display instrument boasting the
same information and look as a PFD.
L-3 designed the Trilogy models for higher-performance
aircraft requiring a Level A standby pack. Both display airspeed,
altitude, attitude, slip/skid and, optionally, magnetic heading.
The 2000 version adds an integral standby battery pack good for
a minimum of one hour of use - a battery which maintains its
charge of the primary electrical system.
L-3's unveiled the first Genesis model, the ESI-5000, at the
2014 National Business Aviation Association Convention specifically for two new Gulfstream models unveiled at the event:
